In military terms, it means to support another organization (security forces) with personnel from a different organization (civil engineering). I worked as a security force (augmentee) for over two years when i was active duty Air Force. Would be on loan to Security Forces for a period of 30-45 days at a time. Air Force and Navy Personnel are augmenteeing our Army and Marine personnel in IRAQ and Afganistan for up to 6 month tours vs standard 120 day deployments (Air Force)

To augment something is to make it bigger... add more of something.

Breast augmentation = bigger boobs

When you talk about military it usually means taking soldiers from one field and putting them in another field that is stressed (need more men).

For example: a lot of military cops are deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan to protect the bases and convoys there. So, here at home, we don't have that many military cops to do all their jobs on base. What the bases do is either higher civilian security guards to check ID's at the gates, or bring in soldiers from other squadrons/batallions to check ID's at the gates. They are called "augmentees".
