As soon as I read this question, I knew I had an answer...but after reading through this list I find that K_Lee and mommy have both given you the same advice that I would give you. The old poem "Children Learn what They Live" still holds true today. Example is the best form of education.
Spend time with them, just you and them, no chores, no work. It's not so much "finding" joy, it's the experience of being able to see and feel the joy.
So, enjoy them and you'll be showing them where the joy in life is.

When the the T.V. is off, no PS2 is allowed, and they just have to go outside and play or find something to do. It's amazing how well they get along and how much happier they are. And when mom has the time to pick up the house and get things done, while the kids aren't taking over every room in the house, it really helps everybody. If parents allow technology to become a child's source for enthusiam, they get bored so easilly, trying to find the next thing to please them. Try the good old-fashioned out-doors.

You do it by example. That is the only way that they will learn it. You can't tell them to look for the joy. You have to look for the joy and share it with them each time you find it.

my kid doest that automatically. Sometimes for walks we look for 10 pretty things.. or 5 different colors in nature. We comment on sunsets and sometimes if it is really nice, we drive out to the city limits to look at it with a pop from the corner store or a slushy. Sometimes we laugh at funny things, like a cow with cool markings or a cat that ran across the road so fast that it tripped. Often if something is pretty we will stop and look at it and talk about it or just mention it in passing. But generally kids I think just do this on their own. They notice if the mashed poatatoes are shaped like a mountain or if the butterfly flew in a cirlce 3 times without getting dizzy... I think they teach us

Teaching them personal responsibility. No matter how fun the "water park or party" was if you didn't finish your homework or clean your room some joy is taken away from them. If they are personally responsible then they are free to enjoy life to the fullest.

By showing them the PRICELESS wonders in life that everyone takes for granted. For example, vacation with them so they can see the beautiful world we live in, go camping, teach them that money isn't everything. My parents did that with me and I have such an appreciation for the natural world and life itself. When you teach your kids that life is more than school, work, and stress, they'll learn to appreciate the small things; which will make it easier to brush off the hard things in life. Good luck ;)

I agree with Mommy. They really do do it naturally. I think that they will continue it if given time to do it. Time that isn't rushed. Let them pursue their interests. Even if it's a ladybug or rock. It's interesting to them. I think too often we fail to see the joy in simple things ourselves and end up discouraging our kids by forgetting to see things from their point of view. Great question!
