During the spring/summer, Portland is beautiful. I cannot imagine why ANYONE would say there's nothing to do here...look, I lived near Disneyland for years, and that area was one of the most high-crime areas in Southern California...teeming with prostitution, meth users/dealers, robberies, car thefts, etc...but I digress. When I was offered a job promotion that took me to Portland, I jumped on the chance and I have never regretted it.
Some things to do:
Saturday Market is every Saturday morning downtown...you can buy all kinds of cool things there...Sauvie Island is just north of Portland; there are U-pick raspberries, marionberries, green beans, and more...plus flowers. They make a mean barbeque as well.
There are tons of places to go day hiking; Multnomah Falls is not far east of Portland, absolutely gorgeous. There is a drive called "the loop" which takes you up Mt. Hood past the Timberline Lodge (mentioned in an earlier post, where part of "The Shining" was filmed)...the drive continues down the back of Mt. Hood, through orchards and around the north side along the Hood River and you can stop at the waterfalls along the way.
There is sailing and windsurfing on the Columbia River just to the north.
There are all kinds of wonderful bakeries downtown, little shops, and coffee houses.
At night there are all kinds of local venues where up and coming unsigned bands play; jazz to thrash metal...
Powell's books, the numerous McMenamin's microbrewery/eateries...Oregon Museum of Science and Industry; then there are neat districts like Hollywood and Belmont where you can check out funky shops, record stores like Music Millennium, oh, and Video Madness (an ultra-unusual video store), places to buy vintage clothing; and one of the McMenamin's establishments called the Baghdad where you can catch a movie and knock back some great beer with pizza.
Of course there are the beaches to the west, and Mount St. Helens to the north, if you're in the mood to look at a volcano that blew up 25 years ago.
Oh, and in the summertime, the sun comes up at around 5AM and sets at about 9:45 PM. Long, beautiful days.
Yes, it rains a lot here, but the locals know that it makes you really appreciate the late spring-early autumn.
I know I'm forgetting quite a few things here...but you tell me: does this sound like a place with nothing to do?
Maybe if you're a barnacle.

DEFINATELY Gearheart Oregon. It is a very small town with gorgeous homes. Mostly the homes of rich Portlanders. It is great because they have a small grocery store, ice creamery, antiques stores... but it is 5 minutes away from costco, fred meyers... There is a Mcmenamins (sp?) in town on the Gearheart Golf Course which is very nice. In the town everything is walking distance, but very close to Astoria and Seaside with many attractions (movie theatres, outlet malls, very large arcades). The Gearheart Beach is private, so there are no cars, motorcycles or anything. VERY safe! Of course the majority of the homes are very expensive (ranging in $1-3 million if they are on the beach side of the main road, but on the other side they aren't expensive at all). Also, Astoria is a GREAT town, they have many homes built up on hills with views of the ocean. It has a very warm feeling for considerable less money the gearheart. Both towns are about 1 hour and 15 minutes away from Portland. It basically depends on your budget and taste. It would be a great idea to rent a house in either city and spend time in both. Good luck! -Alex (PS- now you've got me wanting to go to the beach!)

Check out the many Portland parks, or go to one of the many microbreweries like one of the several, very different, McMenamins pubs or/and movie pubs. They are so fun and unique. I like the Kennedy School McMenamins pub the best, personally. If you like books, check out the largest bookstore in the world, Powell's books. Check out NW 23rd for some great food and cute clothing and art boutiques. On every first Thursday, the Pearl district has modern art shows where you can view current artist's work for free and enjoy complimentary wine. If you like baseball, there is a AAA minor-league baseball team that draws a big crowd on Thursday home games. Also there are a ton of upcoming musicians ion PDX playing at many different venues around town. There is so much to do in Portland in the summer that I could go on forever. If it gets too hot you can go on a $25.00 jet boat ride up and down the Willamette River. I've never gone but everybody that flies by when I'm on the river appears to be having a blast.

I live in Salem, I love outdoors, I'm easily entertained, and I have to say, there's nothing in my city unless you want to spend your time at the movies or bars. In Portland there is shopping, OMSI, the Winterhawks (minor league hockey), Blazers, better restaurants, etc. On the coast, Astoria is full of history, including a 'go to' spot for movies such as the Goonies, Kindergarten Cop, and the Ring. Seaside is a popular destination for teens to up to my age (30) for an almost carnival type boardwalk and beautiful beaches. Depoe Bay further south (sw of Salem by about 1.5 hrs) popular for whale watching, newport for coast aquarium, crabbing, deep sea fishing, etc.

welll, depending on where u are from, and when exactly you are coming to our city. lol...
i like rafting on the clackamas river, or if u have lots of time, u can drive down to the deschutes river, and get on a rafting trip down there, its really fun, and great rapids. portland and most of oregon is known for the beauty, not the stuff really. we have like 5 malls here... lots of movie theaters, if u are into that kind of stuff...
you can also go downtown portland. in the summer, its a crazy place, and u will see al kinds of people. driving to mt.hood, go to the timberline lodge, its pretty, you can take great pictures, eat awesome food, and meet some cool people. its fun. also, when u go there, they will probably have guides of oregon, with some fun stuff to do...the oregon coast is fun, the water is pretty cold, but u can still walk down the streets at seaside and shop, its a cute town... if u go there, go to the "holladay " pharmacy and get a milkshake, they are really freaking good. writing with sticks in the sand is also really fun. lol... there is a lot of stuff
if u have any questions, email me " moomelious@gmail.com"
have fun... its a cool place.

The beach is good at this time of year. Mount Hood is really cool. You can snow ski on the glacier during the summer and the pool is heated by a thermal vent. The lodge at Mt hood is really amazing. It was built during the depression by government labor and completely by hand. The furniture, rugs, drapes etc were hand done and many are still in place and look wonderful. They filmed part of the movie "The Shinning" here and we all remember Nicholson saying "Here's Johnny" Great food and amazing architecture. Beautiful scenery as well. You'll like it. PS.. Lots of young people there keeping in practice for the winter ski-ing season. Some great parties!!

Not much to see or do in Portland. Its located on a river and is pretty boring. The Oregon coast is beautiful but its a healthy drive from Portland. You might want to head to Seattle instead.
