A Ford Fusion. It beat the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord in style handling, and reliability. It has good safety, is stylish, good gas mileage, and will last you a long time without any costly repairs. Also, the parts to it are cheap to repair, so even if it does need to go into the shop, it won't cost you the same it might cost you for a foreign made car. Same with the Ford Focus, which is a tad smaller, gets better gas mileage, and is very reliable and cheap to repair, if needed. I would at leats advise you to check these out because they are very nice first carshttp://www.fordvehicles.com/cars/fusion/ http://www.fordvehicles.com/cars/focus/

Firebirds are crap. That was my first car as a teen.
I'd say a used Corolla or Honda Civic. Most likey the Toyota as the Hondas seem to be involved in a lot of thefts and it's more expensive.
Both are very reliable with good gas mileage. And if its a used model (say at least 5 years old), you won't feel so bad when or if it gets wrecked!

new or used? for yourself or kid?
new: I highly recommend scion tC, mazda 3 or honda civic. Honda fit if you're looking for a car for a girl. theyre all reliable, safe and fuel efficient
used: honda civic or mazda protege. mazdas are often overlooked, making price cheaper significantly, but it has everything from quality to safety. i dont recommend wasting the extra money for acura integra, its basically the same car as civic.
dont go for american, true the parts are cheaper but the terrible reliability will frustrate you, seriously
hope it helps

Get yourself a little Honda. They don't cost a lot and get great mileage. I drove a little CRX for years and never had a problem. I don't know why they stopped making the CRX or that style of super low economy car with a little sports car style to it/ but... Get something used with as little mileage on it as possible. If you decide to by used make sure you use CARFAX so you don't end up with a flood car or something that has the mileage turned back. I have lots of tricks for buying used cars if you are interested. Email if you have any questions.
