We don't need families overseas which we are paying to move there, live there, and have children there. When you join the military, just like becoming a policemen or teacher, you know the pay is low and you have a different lifestyle than a person in the civilian sector.
What the main subject is here is spending, the military budget and having an accounting done to see exactly what we are paying for. in 2005 we paid 11 million dollars for a center on Okinawa, Japan and in 2015 we are all but suppose to be gone from there, with very little left in personnel. People go to the eb site for these bases and have a look at what they have and what we are paying for, besides housing, child care and education for the children overseas. The biggest slice of the taxes goes to the military, hello.

We had a ski lift on my base. We are there because while Japan can have a small defense force they cannot ever have a offensive force. What do you think we should do while we are stationed overseas. Sit in our barracks and wait for people like to you give us the next order? Clearly by your description you haven't been to any of these bases. Go back to school.

First blame the Yanks after the occupation for gelding Japan. With article 9 of the eastern shape extremely saying that no militia tension can go away Japan, subsequently it easily violates the age previous theory of a sovereign usa's potential to self protection with the aid of pre-emptive action. So down in the process the technology the regular guy or woman here thinks that protection spending is a great waste of money. 2d there's a cap on the militia spending of Japan at 5% of GDP subsequently it is a great hamstring to triumph over. additionally there is no longer a militia industry here have been a great form of the hardware is authorized or offered immediately from the U. S. and Europe. kinfolk R&D is next to no longer something as there are actually not any potential clientele (no exportation of weapons allowed) the U. S. bases listed here are the comparable theory as they have been in West Germany, different than for the actuality that the U. S. shared the invasion and occupation of Japan without different usa and not one of the european powers cared if Japan have been given leveled or no longer. subsequently the U. S. forces occupied all of Okinawa and extensive tracks of land around Yokohama, Tokyo and everywhere in the country. some have been given returned, Okinawa replaced into ransomed returned interior the 70s and so on and so on. different sites in Asia are actually not as US friendly as they was once, Philippines extremely has kicked out the U. S. presence. The Koreans are tremendously nationalist by potential of themselves so as that they are actually not all that pleased with the U. S. presence. So Japan for the final 50 years replaced into the little spouse interior the U. S. -Japan alliance, extremely they had to do what ever the U. S. reported. the hot government does not decide to proceed to pay for the U. S. presence extremely as there's no money for it, there's a minority of provider participants who use Japan like they're nevertheless the conquers by potential of raping junior intense college females, killing human beings on the streets and so on and so on. extremely in Okinawa it extremely is a huge difficulty. The Yanks whinge that the eastern take care of them poorly however the comparable difficulty is that the individuals nevertheless take care of Japan as a conquered usa.

First off, Japan has not purchased any F-22s to date. It currently illegal to export the F-22 to any foreign country, though there are talks about manufacturing a lower-tech version of the aircraft for foreign export. The current date at which this plane could be sold in its present state is 2015.

Now, as to why the US needs large (total force equals 39,000 service members and DoD employees) military bases in Japan. In truth, the US doesn't "need" military bases in Japan, but we sure do want them there. It expands our sphere of influence to the pacific rim and puts direct military pressure on China and North Korea.

Plus, USFJ (United States Forces Japan) are currently the only force mandated to provide security beyond the 12 NM territorial water border for Japan. Everything inside that border is secured by the JSDF (Japanese Self-Defense Forces). This was set in place by the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security.

Until Japan actually ratifies their constitution this situation isn't going to change. Though, I don't see this happening in the near future based on public response to sending Japanese troops to Iraq, even with them not involved in combat operations - unless, something monumental happens that severely threatens the security of Japan.

We really don't have any more big bases in Japan. Just a couple small ones. We only have bases in Japan for the same reason that we have bases in Germany. Its going to be the same reason that we will have bases in Iraq for a long time. We are letting them rebuild after we beat them in WW2. We have to trust them to pull out all the way. North Korea is not going to start any thing with Japan till they can get south Korea. The military has been in the last 10 years down size the bases in Japan and Germany.

1) they have no OFFENSIVE military as part of there surrender.

2) cuts down on the transit cost of moving supplies from the states to forgien conflicts. (takes a ship about a month to get here and be ported here for years (decades) or 2.5 months to get to the war zone spend a month there then turn around and come home).

Also when service members are stationed overseas, they have to be here for a set amount of time in order bring family over. Not all bases have these things each branch is different, I had to drive for 3 hrs to get another branch to get 1 thing b/c its not carried at ours.

we started out as an occupying force. we stayed.. because the Diet asked us to. they cannot adequately defend themselves if Kim gets squirrelly.

Golf course? Not on Yokosuka. one driving range. Fine Dining: the O club is HARDLY fine dining, and Sbarro's? puhleeze. Movies: what, so servicemembrs and their families overseas aren't entitled to see a movie once in a while? Bowling: would you rather they spend their free time off base getting drunk and accosting Locals instead? oh, yeah, and the Marina on Yoko ain't all that either.

before you get all pissy about your tax dollars being 'wasted' on families overseas.. keep in mind that we in the military ALSO pay taxes.. so we, in effect, pay our own salaries. chew on that one for a while. and don't begrudge us the chance to do some good outside CONUS.

Because you have bases in Britain, Germany, Philippines... Actually, the US has 702 bases outside the US territory...
So your questions should have been, why does the US needs 702 bases outside the US...
Japan is just one among others....

Actually if your looking for another answer... Projection of power, this is WHY you have such a base in Japan... Because it is better to have one, than no... If you don`t understand what I mean, then I can`t help you...

What you don't understand is that Japan is the cheapest place on Earth to station US military personnel. The Japanese taxpayers pay for virtually everything from utilities to maintenance. About the only thing the US pays for is military personnel's pay and benefits.

It is imperative to have tactical bases on different platforms throughout the Pacific. The base you are talking about is huge, so yes it does have some amenities, big deal, it is also a lot closer to China, and other potential threats.

I personally love supporting our families that live there because they are supporting us by providing for our countries freedoms.
