I recommend you start with an acoustic guitar costing $250 to $300. Alvarez guitars are good for the beginner and experienced, but there are other quality acoustics on hand at your local music store. Ask a guitar technician or salesperson to demonstrate several acoustic guitars for you and as you listen to each one of them you might be able to pick out the sound projection that you like.

Steer clear of the electric guitar until you've had about two years of acoustic playing. The acoustic requires more discipline and finger strength, and once you get past the sore fingertips and grow some thick calluses you will then be on the way to better playing.

The bass guitar is totally different from an acoustic or electric guitar. They usually have four strings whereas the acoustic and the electric have six strings.

Purchase a beginning guitar manual having chords, basic music theory, and instruction on tuning, holding, and caring for the instrument. Your best option is to have a guitar instructor take you through the beginning stages so you won't develop bad habits of chord placement and hand maneuvering.

I've played, gigged, and taught on the side for 20+ years(I'm an engineer until 5pm), so here's my 2 cents-

I'm assuming that you have zero knowledge at the moment. SInce this is your first guitar, stay away from eBay and the internet. There are lots of good beginner packs out there, so I'm not going to recommend a particular brand. Find someone who plays and go to the music store with him/her-get your partner to play some of your choices for you. If the guitar doesn't sound and feel right to you, it's not a good guitar no matter how much you may have paid. You want this to be your first guitar, not your last. Even with a beginner pack, the store should provide a "setup"- adjust the action and intonation, etc. Ask before you pay-if the sales geek wrinkles his nose and says something like "beginner packs come set up from the factory" take your money elsewhere.

Lose the DVD's and software- if you really want to play, find some group lessons at a local nonprofit community music school. You're much better off there than the half-hour at the superstore from the hung-over metalhead who's in between bands. The instructors at the music schools usually have degrees in the field, the lessons are usually less than what you'd pay at guitar center, and the advantage of group lessons is that since you are in with a group of students at about your ability, you can set up jam sessions outside of class. Remember - music is a social activity- if you're sitting alone in your room, you probably won't go very far- Good Luck!

I recommend you get an electric guitar. One that is high quality and will last you a long time, but at a cheap affordable price. The type of guitar you'll be happy you bought as a starter, even after you upgrade.

Many people claim you should start with acoustic, and while you may want to play acoustic later on, I personally feel that it's uninspiring to start on acoustic which makes it HARDER to learn since you don't want to pick the guitar up. You need to buy an instrument you love. So if you feel that way, don't listen to everyone else, go electric.

Rondomusic makes some of the best. I would recommend this one:

It is the one I bought from them and it simply rocks in every way. I'd say it's perfect for you too. :) Many guitar snobs and gear heads praise their guitars even though they are cheap.

Good luck! :D

I play guitar hero a couple years before I pick up the guitar the only thing that helped me with was by coordinations with my fingers and to build some muscle in my hand and that's about it

Go to ur local music shop & see what U can afford. Acoustic is better to start with (& cheaper). Nylon strung is kinder on your fingers. Don't buy off the web - U need to hear and hold the instrument urself. Brunswick make a very nice acoustic with steel strings that sounds great, & isn't too expensive. (UK) Hope this helps, and good luck
