The lien would only attach to her interest in the house, but that should be enough to encourage payment, if the debt is valid.

Absolutely. It happened to my dad. However, the lein IS NOT VALID unless it is followed by a suit. At least in Florida where my dad lives. The hospital put a lein on the house but did not follow it w/ a suit so the house was able to be sold without a problem Had the hospital filed a lawsuit, then the debt would have had to be paid upon the sale of the home.
