My boyfriend bought me a pair of earings for my birthday, 5 days ago, that cost $100. I asked him NOT to buy them for me because they were too expensive but he did anyway.

I really appreciate that he picked them out and bought them for me but to be honest I don't want a $100 pair of earings and I don't need them. I know he could use the money.

Would it be so rude if I returned them and gave him back the money.

I would say, don't do it. Guys can have a hard time expressing their feelings and this is one way of showing you he cares. I mean, returning those earings is like you saying "I love you" and him saying back: "Take your emotions and use it on something other than me". How awful would that be? Just talk to him about it and tell him that he doesn't need to buy you a $100 pair of earrings to tell you he loves you... its the small things that count (and are especially CUTE! teehee!)

I am so extremely proud right now of our gender. Thank you for showing me not all woman are materialistic. You are seriously awesome. If you returned them without asking and gave him the money you would probably humilate him and make him feel bad. I think you should talk to him tell him you really apperciate the gesture but you don't need a material object to justify your relationship. Tell him you really didn't want them and if he doesn't take them back that you will be really upset. Or even threaten to return them yourself and give him the refund. Just make sure you involve him in your decision.

Yes it would be very rude. If you want to return them fine but giving back the money isn't proper. Take the money and buy something you want. If he asks, tell him that they irritated your ears.

to put it bluntly, yes it would be rude

first off, he wanted to buy the earrings. men are providers, and they want to take care of their girlfriends. if you were to return the earrings and give him the money, he would be insulted. it would be as if you were saying "i dont appreciate you sacrificing money to make me happy, and you cant afford these anyway"

just be thankful and let him know his action is greatly appreciated

You can't return gifts, you just have to enjoy it as best you can.
