I like to relax in the hot tub at our apartment complex after swimming in the pool. The hot tub is inside and confined in a medium size room, and usually my little boy just wants to play on the benches and look out the windows while I relax and keep an eye on him, but sometimes he wants to sit on the first step and kick in the water, and sometimes he wants me to help him walk around the seat part of the tub, where the water comes about to his waist. Is it dangerous for him to play in water that warm?

it is not a good idea to let your 2 year old into the hot tub.

his legs will overheat and his little body can't get rid of that excess heat efficiently. Kids can't sweat yet at 2 years old. So his whole body will absorb that extra heat from his hot little legs. He can get bad intestinal, stomach or muscle cramps from the temperature exchange. His feet, his toes, OK.

But not immersed waist deep, OK? And no, he won't "tell you" it's too hot. He is playing, distracted, and enjoying being with you. Those will override the discomfort he feels.

The water in the therapy pool at our Healthplex is a pleasant 92 degrees, and many children take swimming lessons there. The temperture in the whirlpool spa is 104 degrees Fahrenheit, which is uncomfortably hot to me.

Two asides: Communal hot tubs have been known to cause skin eruptions due to bacteria called Pseudomonas. Also, the American Academy of Pediatrics and other safety organizations recommend that home water heaters be set no higher than 120 degrees to avoid accidental scalding of children.

Young children's bodies don't regulate temperature as well as adults. So, if he is just putting his feet in it should be OK. However, if he is getting in with you then he will become overheated much more quickly and not realize it. We have a hottub but I limit the temp for children to under 100 and limit the time in for less than 15 min. I make sure he has some cool water afterward and rests before running around.

Make sure your apartment complex is properly cleaning the hottub. Public hottubs are very germy and kids can get sick more easily from them because everything goes into their mouths.

Children should not go in hot tubs until they can verbalize feeling dizzy, hot, sick, etc.
Non-potty trained children should NEVER go in hot tubs, because the bacteria etc. from diapers and their bottoms will reproduce in the water, making it UNSAFE for everyone.
