Start by writing down * everything * you eat and drink in a day , then total up how many calories that is . You may want a meal plan with about 1800 calories per day to lose weight.

Search google for Diabetic meal plan to find some sites with good simple meal planning advice .

You want to change your eating habits so you are losing a few pounds a week of fat. If you dont get much exercise go for a walk every day. It doesnt have to be a fast walk or a very long distance . Every little bit helps.

See your doctor 1st, so he will be able to give you a diet/ exercise plan that is befitting your physical state.

Eat healthier.

Eat more fruits, veggies, & lean meats like chicken & turkey.

Eat a good breakfast of special K, cheerios, or 2 whole grain waffles or pancakes with 1 tablespoon naturalmaple syrup on each ... also drink maybe about a cup of orange juice with it or have a piece of fruit and drink water. Eating a good breakfast will keep you from getting very hungry early in the day.

In addition to breakfast, break your meals up, instead of eating 2-3 bigger meals a day, have 5-6 smaller ones.

Cut out most of the carbs, fatty foods, & junkfood and opt for healthier snacks, like fruit, cereal bars, veggies, and whole grain breads. You can still have some unhealthy food, just control the portions, like instead of eating 4 pieces of pizza, just have one and a piece of fruit.

Drink lots of water, about 8 medium glasses a day. Don't overdo it, too much water can make you very sick or kill you. Cut out soft drinks and sugary drinks. You can splurge every so often by having a diet soda. Try not to drink too much artificial sweetener though, anything containing aspartame always gave me muscle fatigue and I can actually tell the difference when I work out.

Cardio exercise at least 30 min a day/ 3 days a week. Even walking for your cardio will help a lot. If you are on a treadmill, maybe start at about 1.8 mph for the 1st week, then add 0.2 mph a week until you get to a fast walk (3.1-3.4 mph, speed of a fast walk varies for different people). Always remember to stretch before and after exercise, it will prevent you from getting some very common injuries). Maybe get a treadmill, if you can definitely dedicate yourself to using it. If you can't commit to it, it will just be a waste of money. If you live somewhere that has a decent climate all year long, you won't have to worry about buying one. I live in Pa & buying my treadmill is one if the best investments I ever made for my health.

Weight train 1-2 days a week. Weight training helps raise your metabolism so you burn fat more even while you are resting. If you know of a fitness club near you, maybe sign up for a few months. You can ask an employee to take you around to the weight machines & show you how to use them or take a friend along who is experienced with weights & weight machines. I wouldn't fall into the trap of paying hundreds of dollars for a personal trainer, if you are in doubt maybe pay for a few sessions to get you started.

Good luck!!!

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
