The point is not why did you have to see, the point is why continue keeping it locked up inside when it obviously is eating at you. You feel guilty and have nightmares about it and that will only get worse. That is your conscience telling you to do the right thing. It doesn't matter if the guilty person is family or not. An innocent person was falsely accused and you know the truth. Can you live the rest of your life knowing that you didn't come forward? Don't worry about other people asking why you didn't come forward before. It was a few years ago. You were a different person then. You don't have to answer their questions about why. But you owe it to the innocent person to help him or her clear their name. Let your conscience be your guide. You know the right thing to do.

The person being accused of this "really really bad thing" is innocent and has no one to believe in him/her. They obviously can't prove their innocents and are paying for someone else's crime either emotionally or by being in jail. You are the only person that knows the truth and you really do owe it to the innocent person to allow them to move on with their life.
I always say that if I don't know how to handle something I put myself in the other persons place. If you were accused of something then you would want someone to rescue you from your emotional suffer.
I would anonymously report what you know and only get involved if need be. You will never be totally at peace with this, but you do need to tell someone about it.
I'm sorry for what you are having to deal with. It sounds like you are having a real difficult time with it. Could you maybe speak to a counselor?

If you don't feel as if you can talk to someone close to you in confidentiality, and it's giving you nightmares, I would seek help with a counselor, whether it be at school, or elsewhere. Talk to an impartial party. Someone not involved with EITHER your other friends or family. At least then you'll have gotten it off of your chest, and they might be able to give you an outside opinion on where to go next with it, or if it needs to be handled at all.

It sounds like whatever it was that you saw is really serious and needs to be told to someone... It seems to be eating you up inside and if you keep letting it get to you... one day it's just going to come out at the wrong time and then it's going to be really bad... you don't want that to happen

If its a criminal matter, then you seriously need to discuss it privately with someone else. Maybe one of your parents? The longer you wait, the more it's going to weigh on your mind. Don't just keep putting it off. That'll only make things worse.

tell the truth now, be a person of integrity. your conscience is telling you to come forth, DO NOT JUST TELL A COUNSELOR, YOU NEED TO TELL THE AUTHORITIES. How would you like to be the person who is falsely accused??
