As everyone has already said, brush and/or comb often. But by hairball treats, are you referring to the hard treats or petromalt style? Petromalt is basically flavored vasoline (petroleum jelly). We give our cats straight vasoline, they will actually take it off our fingers but some cats need it to be put onto a paw for them to clean off. This lubricates the hair and helps it go through their system easier and come out the correct end.

Yes, hearing that yacking/hacking is verfy painful. With my cat, I have to say that it's probably more painful to me than my cat!
Try to brush your kitty as often as possible. Whenever you can, really. If he's lying somewhere comfortably then just give him a few strokes. That way, there will be much less fur for him to swallow when he grooms himself.
Also, give him some green stuff, i.e. cat grass. That also helps.
Good luck!

Hairballs are caused when your cat grooms himself. They swallow the lose fur, and eventually end up hacking it back up. I would brush him often; at least 3 times a day if possible. It's getting to be summer time, when cats and dogs alike shed a lot of fur. If you brush him, it will get a lot of the loose fur out, and therefore he has no hair to have to cough back up.

You could try grooming him more frequently. Comb out the loose hairs before he coughs them up.
