My dog was spayed on Friday. She doesn't act like it hurts her much but she is acting really weird. She won't eat or drink unless we bring it to her. When she has to walk she jumps around all over the place like she don't want to use her back legs. Then she stops as soon as she can to try and scratch. She hasn't been whinning. Just acting a little strange. Is this a normal reaction?

Thanks for all the answers. Many people said to be easy on her. I have been. She is very well taken care of. I simply was asking about her behavior when she does get up. I don't force her too. I have all kinds of blankets for her to lay on, I bring her food and water. and she even has a toy to play with when she gets bored. :)

Yeah. The eating and drinking part sounds like she likes you to wait on her. Give the vet a call tomorrow.

I am going through the same thing with my 7 month old female Labrador. Poor thing. She will not walk more than a step or two. I have carried her outside where she can relieve herself but she won't. It has been 24 hours since the operation, and I am thinking that with each day she will return to normal. The important thing is to keep her from getting at the incision site. The Elizabethan collar is working but it also adds to her discomfort. This is a very stressful time for the dog.

first i'm gonna assume ur not letting her lick it cause that would be very very bad.
2nd u know ur dog...if u think something is up call the vet...its the best!
my male was the same way...but he had ripped out the stitches before we picked him up...so he had a reason to not want to walk (thats what i/he gets for trying to save a buck). i would have a look at the incision site.. it should be pinkish..a little dry blood would be normal. she is gonna be sore...just like any human. and just like humans pain differs for each...pretty much she's a sissy...lol..its ok i have one too. let her take it easy...but every day move the food and water a bit close to where its always at....
good luck!

Well, if she isn't on pain meds, imagine having surgery and then no pain meds to keep you from feeling the pain afterward. I wouldn't feel like eating or drinking either. I sure wouldn't feel like walking or jumping around. Please take it easy on her. She just had major surgery.
This would be equivalent to you having a hysterectomy (in other words removing your uterus.) Not a little surgery... this is major. Be careful with her.
Dogs try to minimize the amount of pain shown out of instinctual behavior... they don't want to look weak... or the pack will attack their own (if they show signs of pain/weakness).... So, dogs will act like nothing is horribly wrong sometimes even if they are in extreme pain.

She probably just feels a little uncomfortable. Having surgery there is a tough spot, so she probably just doesn't even know what to do. Talk to your vet and see if another dog has had this problem after being spayed.

After being spayed one of my dogs spent the night sleeping while standing up with her chin on the back of the couch. She was fine the next day, but I really felt sorry for her. Call the vet if you are worried.

check the incision area to make sure it isn't oozong or red an inflamed. Might just be teh feelilng of teh stitches.
callthe vet tomorrow and tell them and see what tehy say. I don't think it's an emergency unless you notice something that doesn't look right at teh incission.

Imagine a full hysterectomy! I'd be moving slow too. But call the vet tomorrow anyway, because there may be infection at the suture site.

She is still in pain -- she needs to be kept quiet and still so her stitches are not torn.. She does not jump period until the stitches are removed.
