Yahh, the Catholic Church has made a few controversial missteps in the past... like many "holy wars" for instance that had no real catalyst or reason behind them... those were merely men just looking for a reason to kill and they used their religion as an excuse (not just Christianity either).

Also, men in power (like the previous popes) who controlled everything were drunk with it and actually led themselves to believe that they were like god's themselves so they took the authority to just kill whoever they felt didn't fit human standards based on beliefs.

Consider Bush as the new "I rule the world" mental case... he decided to walk into Iraq for what reason? I think it's something like 300,000+ Iraqis killed comparatively to the 3,000 U.S killed? That's honestly a disgrace... i actually heard stories about some U.S troops walking the streets and meetin a status quo for kills ina day.

And Bush is no model Christian either.

So you decide, God's will? Or Human Tyranny?

Have you ever studied how Catholicism oppressed the masses and burned suspected witches at the stake? Torturing "heretics" to confess witchcraft isn't very decent, either. Carl Sagan's Demon Haunted World studied a list of some of those killed. Everyone from a 6-year-old girl to students and geniuses were burned alive by the religious authorities.

Most religions have a violent streak, meaning that men (rarely women like Bloody Mary) use religion to control others and direct the population as they choose, and to mask free debates on the issues of the time.

As atheists do not believe in god, why would we blame something that does exist? Religion uses gods as an excuse, so we dislike the idea of a savage god and the way people use it. It is their philosophy we fault, not a non-existent man.

Actual atheists are actual human beings, who have rights to be, if they choose, as pig headed as anyone. However most that I know value education and freedom of belief, and so might hesitate to blame God for human wickedness - indeed, God is not an acceptable excuse! But they would also say no church, perceived monolythicly or not, is actually guided by Deity since they think no Deity exists.

Now, religion believers might blame "the Catholic Church" for all the misteps and wickedness of all of their adherents throughout the millenia - and wouldn't that be silly, too? What an incompassionate, rigid view, even of an individual life, to never allow for change, or passing phases, or immaturity, or the possibility of inconsistency...

To perceive one life in so static a manner - or any social institution - is the mental perception of a very young mind, one that has yet to forgive its parents, or perceive itself.

No, no, no. Atheists say nothing is because of God because God doesn't exist.

Some atheists blame a lot of the evil that man does on man using his belief in God to justify doing bad things. You're post gives a good argument with several solid examples in support of that position.

Everything is about interpretation. If you're gonna start talking about these things then why did you not mention the fact that a lot of Catholic priests are doing things to their alter boys that shouldn't be done? Would you call that G-d's will or human derision?

The Pope does claim to represent God on this planet, so the assumption is more on the Catholic side than ours. The problem is most Catholics don't seem to care what the Pope things, so we don't give it much credit either.

It is supposed to govern your whole life. You can't just kill someone and say it doesn't count because it didn't have to do with your religion.

No...I know many Catholics and know that this is not true. They are as hypocritical as every other religious person.
