So is it legal to download it and then change the Key to the one that I have on my computer. In case anyone is wondering, I want the CD because if anything ever bad happens, I could always reinstall XP with a clean install. I don't want to use backup programs either. So is it legal?

nope not legal, but think about it. MS has quit supporting XP since Vista has come out. I don't think they'll prosecute you for having their OLD os. I think MS will forgive you if you get a copy. Just try not to make money off of it by running a business with that borrowed copy. or sell any type of computer created goods while running it.

once you have the product key, you're all desirable. you could now borrow a CD of living house windows XP from a chum or each and every person you recognize. you could desire to make confident, that the CD you borrow is an identical living house windows version as your initially CD. I propose XP living house or XP professional you could deploy living house windows with the borrowed CD and change on it which includes your product key. Make a back up replica of the CD.

You should probably contact Microsoft if you lost your CD.

Usually your CD key only works with the specific version of windows that came with that key. You'll never be able to figure out if the version you download will work until you've tried it.

Downloading software is an excellent way to get infected. You could borrow someones disk and use your activation key.

If the software was included on the new computer then you will need to contact the manufacturer and request the disk(s), a common request.

Run "Keyfinder Thing 3.1.6" and print out the results.

I am no expert and i don't mind being corrected if i am wrong.
My friend (out of contact at the moment so i can not confirm) was in your situation.I remember him telling me he download form limewire on someone elses computer the installed on his own and used his code on the side of the computer (you know the sticker) and had no problems.
I think you get problems if you use a cracked code.
lol (I am sure you will get a better answer from someone who knows better)

you can legally download it from Microsoft but you must pay for it and get a new Key
but if you did download from a p2p site(that would be illegal) it would work with your key
