Here's the deal, I'm pretty much bored with my job and my life. I work a 9 to 5 in an office and I'm starting to realize its just not cutting it anymore. My daily routine during the week is usually gym, work, dinner, tv, bed. I'm looking for a different career path that will give me that rush I've been looking.

The only time I really feel a rush is when I'm playing sports or gambling. Since those two are out of the question as a profession does anyone have ideas on a job that can fulfill these needs?

You could sell everything you own, grab your passport and a backpack of clothes and head out in to the wide open world.... No plans, no destinations... and just travel until you find you want to go back. My dads friend did this at 18, and says it made his life for him. He got part time jobs here and there along the way, working his way through a few countries to make the money last a bit longer. He did a lot of volunteer work as well, in different areas, and all in all, it helped him sort out what he wanted to do with the rest of his life... You never know, you might meet someone and fall in love, could find the perfect job offer for you, whatever. Just imagine, as you hand your notice in with a smile on your face and walk towards the door.... and just start signing "Cos I'm leaving on a jet plane, don't know when i'll be back again...."

Glad to see that you are going to the gym, but you don't mention anything about spending time with friends or family.

Sometimes changing just one piece of your routine will make some difference in your life. It may make you feel different enough so that you can start thinking about putting your life in perspective. For example, you could try reading instead of TV; or going to work earlier, gym after work (or sports or volunteering), then TV and bed.

Have you tried talking to a good friend about your rut? Does your company have an employee assistance program (EAP)? Have you considered speaking to a therapist? Or, talking to an employment counsellor about a different line of work? Visit your local employment centre and ask to have an interest and aptitude test.

In the meantime, consider reading a self-help book for people looking for a career change, like "What colour is your parachute?" by Richard Nelson Bolles, or "I could do anything, if only I knew what it was" by Barbara Sher.

Good luck

My analysis to your problem:
1. You are not finding any new challenges in your job.
2. You don't feel of any achievement by your job.
If my analysis is correct, my suggestion would be ...
1. Analyze your competency and see if you have capability to start your own business
2. If yes, start working towards that. Create this new business as a new project and create a workable plan for this.
3. Create a schedule and and follow all the skills that you have to make this project a success.
4. Set targets (checkpoints). And try to match your achievements with those. Find area of improvement.
5. If you are able to complete the planning phase, identify competitors and make a plan to face them.

You being owner of this business, would certainly like to face challenges posed by the competition. I hope this will bring new enthusiasm in your life and also would help you identify your strengths.

If you need my help, do let me know.

Regards

I was right where you were at a year ago. I'm serious!!! My friend figured out what I should do. Let me say this it was the best thing I could of ever done for myself. I have no boss
I set my own hours and I get paid for helping people out.
It is really a blessing on how far I came by doing this. I'm serious!!
E-mail me I will tell you how you can get started
saved61101@yahoo.com it may take a day or two before I get back with you because I'm going to Vegas.
I can do that because I have no set hours or boss. Also it's tax
deductible because I'm going to help people out. If your scared don't e-mail me because I'm looking for leaders not
scary cats.

How about a job tying in one of your interests. Working at a casino, a race track, for a team or at a sporting goods store or a gym. Anything has to be better than working in an office everyday.

I can understand what you are going through as I am in the same boat. If you say you like gambling you can use it in a productive way. Consider doing investment management for your own sake. This can add some excitement and can also provide additional source of income. But first educate yourself before investing so that you dont lose money.. Just my 0.02c

I have posted a question of how to get educational background for becomming a investment manager and investing in stocks. I have not got very good answers as of yet I am researching myself as well.

Life is like a film. And, you are the director. What kind of film have you created for yourself? Soap opera? Sob story? Seventh grade hygiene film? As a hospice nurse, listening to thousands of people as they bring their lives down to the most meaningful essences, the one regret they all have is that they directed their precious time spent in this existence to be boring lives. DO more. RISK more. Stay out of Indian casinos. : )

If you like sports, try a career that's related. Like coaching a team, look into being a sports anouncer, selling equipment or something like that.
