we have 2 sons, 5 & 7 with classical autism. no verbal skills, plenty of stimulation behaviors. the school has been barely better than babysitting (although we do need the time). we get ABA in home 5 days a week. i credit that with all the gains they've made.
so the normal aba therapy works in 10 minute segments, repeating a specific task. rewards of praise or treats for correct actions, hand over hand correction or verbal prompts for incorrect action. 5 minutes off. one task will take two or three 10 min segments, then a change.
outside of therapy, they react well to physical activity (park, beach).

I have a 7 year old son with autism, and the best thing you can do for them is to put them in an appropriate school. They have done wonders for my son. Good luck!

my 6 year old has aspergers, a mild form of autism. we actually bought her a game cube because she has poor eye hand coordination. we also have her seeing an occupational therapist every week, they help her a lot and have offered many suggestions. one that we use is yoga. she enjoys this a lot because it is something we can do together!
