A little about myself. I weigh about 280 and really want to lose weight. I am very guilty of drinking sodas and can usually drink at least 2 two-liters per day. I know, not good. I want to cut that out completely and go to water and actually develop a good exercise program. What would you suggest? I am in pretty good health and thought about going and walking/running around the track and of course, eating right. I usually don't eat much at all, most of mine is sodas and not being active enough I guess. Appreciate it if someone can give me ideas or stuff to do (I know cut out the dr. peppers). Thanks.

Losing weight is a simple equation: if you burn more calories than you eat, the weight will come off. Start off by estimating how many calories you burn each day using the calorie calculator http://straighthealth.com/pages/tools/caloriecalclb.html This will give you an idea of how many calories to eat. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. To lose 1 pound per week you need to create a calorie deficit (burn more than you eat) of 500 calories per day. To lose 2 pounds a week, you have to double the deficit to 1000 calories per day. You can achieve this by eating less, exercising more or a combination of both.

A few words in advance, its not gonna be easy trust me.
Right now I'm on the same path with somewhat similar conditions and I've been taken to a Trainer recently and he's given a lot of useful tips and tricks that although arent too easy, will be more effectivee then you know.

First, Diet. Dieting is not the only thinkg that you have to utilize(meaning cutting back on foods) but also timing. When you eat and how many times you eat a day greatly affect yoru metabolism and weight.
So, my suggestion eat about 5 meals a day(crazy huh?) but all in VERY small portions such as a few egg whites, a small piece of chicken, or a few veggies. SO seperate these all evenly as well or its useless. Now out of these portions an obvious statement is cut out as much fat, carbs, and calories as you can but not too the poitn where you are starving yourself. the Reason for eating this many times is you wanna keep your body nourished while not spoiling it. If you only eat two meals a day say eight hours apart or so, yourbody will think your starving yourself and in defense, will slow down your metabolism quite a bit not only making it harder to lose fat but also stealing away energy.
Another useful tiip isin the morning RIGHT after you brush your teeth and wash your face, drink two full glasses of water, thisll jumpstart your metabolism for the day and make losing weight ALOT easier.

Excercise! In excercising, Cardio activities(Running, jogging, sports) are all good and can and should be done at least 2 to 3 times a week and even everyday if your up to it! But its not enough, Cardio will only make you lose fat, and while thats good its also bad. You'll never improve much and you also might end up with saggy skin in the end so whiel its good it NEEDS to be paired up with resistance training(Weights, squats, curls, situps, pushups) to balance it all out and give you a nice firm, tone body when your done.
So if possible utilize what you can from situps, curls and pushups at home, to Weight lifting and such in a gym at least 2 times a week if not 3.

Hope this helps.

You cut out the soda and start walking and you'll be well on your way. The thing is that you are going to suffer from massive caffeine headaches if you quit the soda just like flipping off a light switch. You are also going to crave them. I'd stock up on some motrin (for the head pains). If at all possible maybe allow yourself 2, no more than 2 12 oz. DIET sodas. Then try to get in at least 30 minutes of walking. As you start to shape up, you might want to try jogging. Just don't over do it too soon. Congratulations to you for taking charge of your health!

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
