hey queenie, don't answer Ford questions then. Absolutely it is a good buy. My wife and I bought a 2000 model at the end of 2005 and we have had great luck with it. We paid 4995.00 and it had 123,000 on it and now we have 150,000 on it and it gets 23 mpg in the winter and around 20 in summer(A/C pulls a little mileage away). It has the 4.0 engine. I don't know if you mean older but the second and third generation explorers are great vehicles. People that talk trash on them prob had one and never did preventative maint which you have to do to all cars.

It's been the best selling SUV in America, almost uninterrupted, for a decade; Americans may be wrong about their choice for President but not when it comes to what they want in a car.
I'm assuming you're intelligent enough to know that buying an older SUV you're not going to get a perfect ride, styling, or great gas mileage so comparing it to today's Toyotas or Hondas isn't fair. And the older Asian models are much more expensive to repair. If you're going used, go American.

I've got a 97 I paid $5k for 5 years ago, it's been pretty dependible, plenty of power with the 4.0 sohc (same engine as the new Mustang) and gets between 16 and 20 mpg. It now has 165k on it and I drive it hard.

There's a reason why owners call it a Ford Exploder. Read and learn about the transmission from the 90s to present.

No, they are slow, get poor gas mileage, and are not very reliable. Think Subaru, HOnda, or Toyota.
