If the government fails to legalize same-sex unions, this will set a precedent regarding the government's ability to restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens. Soon (especially if we continue to elect hard-headed Southern Republicans to the presidency), we may be facing a federal ban on inter-racial marriages. In order to ensure that no one is able to circumvent this law, all Americans will be required to have a racial genetic profile, and government workers will match each person with their closest exact racial match outside of their own family -- because after all, none of us are 100% caucasian, hispanic, african-american, etc.
Okay, so maybe its unrealistic ... but I felt like playing the other side of the "people will be marrying animals" argument.

James -- and aren't same-sex unions and human-animal unions very different things?

Milwaukee -- Being a Christian living in the South, I can personally tell you that there are people who quote Bible verses stating that inter-racial couples are sinful. Since same-sex marriages are being banned (basically) for religious reasons, does it not stand to reason that other "unconventional" unions could possibly be banned as well?

Does this verse not suggest that marrying between races or tribes of people is wrong in the eyes of God?
Nehemiah 13:23-26
23. In those days also saw I the Jews that had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, (and) of Moab: 24. and their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people. 25. And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, (saying), Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves. 26. Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did foreign women cause to sin.
Don't get me wrong. I don't have a problem with inter-racial marriage. I'm just making a point.
