If the government fails to legalize same-sex unions, this will set a precedent regarding the government's ability to restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens. Soon (especially if we continue to elect hard-headed Southern Republicans to the presidency), we may be facing a federal ban on inter-racial marriages. In order to ensure that no one is able to circumvent this law, all Americans will be required to have a racial genetic profile, and government workers will match each person with their closest exact racial match outside of their own family -- because after all, none of us are 100% caucasian, hispanic, african-american, etc.

Okay, so maybe its unrealistic ... but I felt like playing the other side of the "people will be marrying animals" argument.

James -- and aren't same-sex unions and human-animal unions very different things?

Milwaukee -- Being a Christian living in the South, I can personally tell you that there are people who quote Bible verses stating that inter-racial couples are sinful. Since same-sex marriages are being banned (basically) for religious reasons, does it not stand to reason that other "unconventional" unions could possibly be banned as well?

Does this verse not suggest that marrying between races or tribes of people is wrong in the eyes of God?
Nehemiah 13:23-26
23. In those days also saw I the Jews that had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, (and) of Moab: 24. and their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people. 25. And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, (saying), Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves. 26. Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did foreign women cause to sin.

Don't get me wrong. I don't have a problem with inter-racial marriage. I'm just making a point.

I can not for the life of me see why people have such a problem with people who love each other to get married. I still don't see how they can say gay people marrying demean the institution of marriage when it's straight people who are causing the problem with divorce and abuse.

The sad fact of it is I can actually see this country turning into a totalitarian government and they pass laws saying white people can only marry white people, etc, and disabled people would be sterilzed and not allowed to marry at all. It scares me that there's a very real possibility this could happen.

Oh, please, governmental restrictions have nothing to do with same-sex marriage; the fact we're all being watched by Big Brother is far more relevant, and saying inter-racial marriages could be banned is intelligence-insulting hyperbole.

You demean how dangerously controlling governments are by making this about sexual orientation and race.

They don't care what our demographics are, they just want to control us.

All you have to do is read the original Roe v. Wade decision and then compare that to where we are today... critics of Roe used the term "Slippery Slope" to describe the consequences of that legislation.

It has come true with a vengeance.

Sometimes I think there is no morality. There is only what is popularly accepted.

Health insurance issue: You have to pay to get health insurance, and you pay more for a family account than a single account. Plus, insured people isn't a bad thing. Uninsured people incur more costs on the system by visiting the E.R. for minor problems.

First of all, being gay is a definite wrong and sin.

Inter-racial? That makes no sense. I can marry whoever I want as long as they are the opposite sex. This is not a valid argument unless you're pretending we still have slavery. Gosh.

Anyway, I would hope that Christians who read this know what God says about gays and gay marriage. We should all know it's wrong.
