I'm talking to gunshop and the guy is trying to talk me into buying a Makarov 9mm. I don't know anything about guns, all I know is that this one is cheap, about $200. Is it a good gun?

Also, are hungarian and polish weapons good in general?

Thanks!

Hey David S, there is plenty of American made junk out there too. Ever hear of Lorcin Engineering, Bryco Jennings, Raven Arms, or Phoenix arms? Grow up, American made doesn't always mean outstanding quality, it means made by capitalists who have "make money" imbedded in their mind. If quality and profit go together its good for the producer, its also good if there is poor quality and profit.

A true Makarov is a great gun. I would love to get my hands on a Bulgarian or Soviet Russian model. The Hungarian ones are not true Makarovs. The Plosh P-64 is the closest you can easily find. I would say that yes, Poland and Hungaria produced some great guns. I don't own pistols from either but I got a Hungarian AMD-65 and a Polish AK-74 Tantal which are both outstanding.

For the same money you can buy a current production '"Makarov type" model in a Bersa Thunder 380 with a much better trigger and de-cocker safety. The Walther PPK, Sig 232, Makarov, and Bersa Thunder are all the same type gun. They all look very similar and from the largest to the smallest there may be about 1" difference in length and about 1/2" in hight. I just bought a Thunder 2 weeks ago and it shoots as good as any gun I have had. They come in 7, 8, and 15 round models. Cost is about $250 to $325 depending on which one and where you buy it. I highly recommend the Bersa Thunder. It will shoot better that any of those above. The Takarev is a different animal. P.S. I have the Mak- its a good but rough gun. I had the Tak, but it went missing. I would not recommend it. P.S.2: The Tak is 7.62 x25, and some 9x19. The Mak PM is a 9x18.

Yes, yes and yes (generally speaking). The .9mm Makarov is actually about a .9x18mm. It is slightly shorter than the .9x19mm (regular .9mm) and somewhat longer than the .380 acp. I've seen some .9mm Makarovs that are high capacity double-action semi-automatics but have never fired one. If the trigger pull feels right to you and if ammo availability is not a problem where you are, then for $200+ or -, why not? If you intend to buy one for personal/home defense make sure you can get the hollow-point ammo. I hear it is more readily available now. It is more powerful than the .380 but less so than the full size .9mm and you can't subsitute the .9mm or the .380 ammo, so make sure the Makarov ammo is available.

OK you are buying a very good small military side arm if it is a true makarove it will feed and fire any thing that is set for it,s caliber however i can not say the same for the polish one,s they tend to misfire and burp on a regular Basie,s the best makarove,s are eather Russian or east German followed by Hungarian and Yugoslavian with the polish one as last resort \ the 9x18 round you will find is comprable with most police pistol,s ie glock and sig \ goood luck and if you can get some extra clip,s

Makarov is a good reliable military weapon but why get the grief of a different type of ammo. Get an american made 9mm that will have parts available if something breaks and you can always get ammo. German and Czek are primo models but there is no such thing as a bad one.

Its not what you pay for something that matters, its what you get for what you pay... Pass it up... Buy a quality, good used handgun preferably in 357 Magnum, because you can also shoot 38 caliber ammo in it. Let the other guy pay the new price. I buy all my firearms used, Rifles, Pistols, Revolvers and Shotguns. All twenty-two of them. No regrets here. Save yourself $$. There is a big difference in price between buying new and buying used..
