Carry it with you. Baggage handlers are not very carefull with checked in luggage, sometimes dropping them a few feet. They also scan your luggage, so they can see what is inside of it, and there has been many reports of stolen items from luggage. A laptop most certainly would be a nice gift for a baggage handler.

Carry it with you, unless if you want it broken, or possibly gone when you receive your luggage

I have been there and done that and carrying the Laptop is the only way to go. If I may suggest though. I have since stopped carrying my lap top anywhere. There are Internet cafes any where in the world now and believe me, it is comforting not to have the brick with you. If you are just doing domestic travel I would probably take it along. But internationally, never again!! Its really easy without it. I swear!

Don't *ever* check a computer unless you want it damaged or lost.
