Honestly, I have been trapped in that same cycle. I am an alcoholic. I drank because I was depressed until eventually I was depressed when I drank. (confusing?) Depending on how much you drink (only you can decide) you may need to detox and then while at a detox you can ask about what medications may help with your depression. Not everyone needs detox and not everyone needs medication.
You could also find an AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) meeting in your area. That might help.
I am sorry you are having such a rough time right now. Just keep your head up. At least you are interested in a solution and are asking for help.
Good Luck!

If you drink a lot, then it IS causing your depression.
Alcohol is used because it puts you 'out of touch' with parts of yourself (eg inhibitions, judgement, etc). This can seem pleasant, especially if it takes you away from worries and responsibilities.
However, the condition it causes can be described as 'alienation'. This is, by definition, confusing and 'depressing', and you will develop something very similar to clinical depression if you get used to 'taking refuge' in alcohol.
If you were depressed before you started drinking so much, then stopping drinking might seem frightening; you will be more 'in touch' with the depression you felt. However, being 'cut off' from it is bound to make it more difficult to resolve. People CAN recover from depression, but this normally involves trusting professionals who can help to deal with it, rather than 'hiding' from the condition.

It could be either. Chronic alcohol use can cause depressive symptoms. Many people with depression and other mood disorders use alcohol as a form of self-medicating. What came first the depression or the drinking?

Both! It's a vicious cycle. To break it, take a breather and try and work out why you drink, and if your drinking is a problem, find another way of dealing with it. This could be anything from antidepressants to getting a new circle of friends to finding a new job. This can be hard to do as what you want isn't always what you need, so good luck.

ask why you drink alcohol in the first place. i only really drink if i am really stressed, it makes me feel better at the time, but after a sleep i still have my worries. Alcohol is the worst thing you can have when depressed, if you try replacing alcohol with a walk and a glass of water, you will feel better

i think you started to drink because you was depressed and needed some escapism but now the drinking depresses you. you need to look at why you started drinking to find the answer to your question, without that answer you will keep going round in circles circling the plughole of life

Alcohol can be a depressant for some folks, and therefore you may well have a cathartic reliance going on there, check it out with your doctor, he may refer you to someone who can help you/

Probably both. And they BOTH need treatment. The good part is, you CAN treat and most likely get rid of both!!
:-) I wish you all the best!! Good luck!
