'pruebe el paquete de muestra'
is a much better choice, because 'intente'
has the connotation of attempting, having the intention of doing something, endeavoring, as in
'intentare dejar de fumar'- i'll try to quit smoking
intente ser enfermera, pero la carrera no era para mi'-
i tried to be a nurse, but the career wasn't for me.
tuve la intencion de pedirte disculpas, pero no tenia el coraje de llamarte- i meant to apologize, but didn't have the guts to call you.
nosotros nunca usariamos 'intente'

No, you would use pruebe, as in to try or to test, tratar is used for expressions like trying to do something.
Pruebe el paquete...etc.
