As a general dentist myself I agree with the answers above, do not let money be the reason you go into a career. Dental school is A LOT of hard work and costs a lot of money, especially if you end up getting into a career for all the wrong reasons. I can speak for almost all of my fellow dentists out there when I do say that we honestly got into this profession to help people. back to your questions, a dentist does make a very comfortable living, my salary last year for 2006 was just over $215,000.

Dentistry isn't for people who are just in it for the money....honestly, it is a hard and stressful profession that if your heart isn't in it then it's not worth it.

I am currently going to school to be a general dentist (3 more years to go!). I have 4 years in school, most likely a 1-2 year residency, then I will expect to make $110k out of school. The average from the ADA for practice owners is around $175k. Certian specialities can make upwards of $250k.

Please, please, please bear in mind the debt that comes with going into dental school. I am going to a cheaper instate school and I still expect to graduate carrying nearly $250k of debt only from school. Compound that with 8% interest over 10-15 years and I'm not looking to make the ADA estimate until I reach my late 30s. Ouch.

Check out the predental/dental sections of http://www.studentdoctor.net for some good ideas on salary, student life and lifestyle.

Good luck with what you decide.

You make a good salary But it isn't always as good as it looks after paying school loans and all the loans you have out on the dental office and all your home/car loans, etc.

HELLO GREGORY,
I'VE DEALT WITH A SIMILAR SUBJECT WITH YOU IN THE PAST. SUFFICE IT TO SAY THAT MOST DENTISTS MAKE A COMFORTABLE LIVING, BUT IF YOU WANT THIS PROFESSION JUST TO MAKE A BUCK IT'S NOT RIGHT FOR YOU.
