Depending on what the doc tells you is wrong with you. Motrin and rest lots of rest till you get rid of the back pain. It can actually get pain full just being in bed for 3 day's or more doing little or nothing but resting. Then if it is weight, or muscle related proper diet and exercise to keep it away proper lifting is essential and when you feel the signs coming on again stop what your doing and relax again so it go's away quicker next time.

You can get a lot of different types of pain relieve over the counter. The best rule of thumb is going for the lowest strenght of pain relieve that you need.
Try Paracetamol first. If it doest help, go for Panadeine Plus (paracetamol/codeine). If it still doesn't help, go for Diclofenac tablets. Remember that ultimately you have to figure out why you are having the pain the first place. Prevention is the best way to go. Don't keep masking the pain with pain-killers. Find out the cause.

Ibuprofen works best as it also alleviates inflammation, which is probably part of the problem. Using a heating pad or rice sock also helps. Massage, or use a shower head that has a pulsing action to massage your lower back.

If you are lighting your hands on fire and they are burning, do you get something to kill the pain? No, stop lighting your hands on fire.
The pain is your body telling you that something is wrong and you need to to find out what, not just kill the pain. Pain killers like Tylenol (liver damage) and Vioxx kill people. See site below to fix the problem instead of just killing the pain and yourself.

I heard that if the pain spreads to the ear then it is a sign of dry socket. I would contact your dentist.

excedrin works very well, as does aleve...but always take aspirin with some milk or some type of food so you don't get an upset stomach...don't need an upset stomach when your back is aching...

Motrin works best for me. Try anything that contains ibuprofen.

Without using any kind of medication - I live for the well patch "heat pads" that stick to your skin. They are great and then there are no worries about meds.
