Because it is the most effective way they have of communicating. They can't tell you what is wrong (sometimes they don't know themselves), so they just cry and leave it up to you to figure it out and sort it.

When young children cry, you can count on it that there is a reason. You may have to be houdini to figure out just what that reason is because youngsters are often unable to communicate their needs. Be quick to comfort. Investigate to learn if they are injured, need a change or just needed the attention. Ask if they need a drink. Ask if they are ok now. If that doesn't do it see if they want to be held a minute. Often if that is the case they are tired. The other option is that they may be hungry. If you aren't mom, they may be missing her.
Good luck and give it time, you will learn.

They don't cry for no reason. It's just that you don't know what the reason is. If you can't work out or they can't tell you what is wrong (and of course it might not be something you would think worthy of crying about) just offer a hug (assuming you have a huggable type of relationship with the child) or other appropriate comfort until they calm down.

Young children who are still unable to communicate often cry for no apparent reason when they are tired, hungry, separated from a parent, frightened by something, or just generally not feeling well.

There's always a reason--even plain boredom. Tired, cranky, hungry, lonely, scared...there are a lot of reasons why a young child might cry.

there's usually a reason. and it depends on the age of the child. hunger, soiled diaper, tired, pain, stress, the list goes on and on. crying sometimes is just a release of pent up stress. everyone needs a good cry now and again. :)

There is always a reason for an outburst, even if it's to get attention.
If you think that this happens a lot and the child cannot properly express it to you then you should go give them a full physical. There might be something internally wrong.

Sometimes they're overstimulated. They don't want to talk anymore. They want to be left alone.
If you're really concerned, there's a lady who was on Oprah who can interpret any baby's cry to tell what the baby wants. Oprah.com.

For the same reasons you feel sad sometimes. They just can' tell you exactly why they are sad.
You have to learn what they are saying, and help them become happy. i.e. feed, change, cuddle, play, or talk to them.
