I'm an atheist, but I'd like to know what led others to walk away from their faith. For me it was asking a lot of questions, I just had a lot of things happen to me, and I realized that there was no god there for me and that all of us are alone. Anyway, I'd just like to know what made other people walk away.

For me it was the hypercritic attitude of the people. I TRULY believed for so long, but then I made one mistake and was immediately cast out..completely. If God is sopposed to be a forgiving god, and you are sopposed to be like him, how can you judge others?! If believing means I have to be cruel to others, it is not worth it to me.

Actually there is LOTS and lots of historical evidence of the
existance of jesus, where did you study??..lol..as for the
question, i didnt walk away from faith, i still believe, however
i am rather disgusted with the state of the "american"
Christian church and the bandwagon approach it has to
preaching that is going on, for example: the prosperity
gospel movement that took hold of all the "big name"
preachers and televangelists that you see these days.
There is no where in the bible when i read it that it says
a Christian is supposed to be a millionaire if they give all
there money to the church, if you read the bible and take
it at face value and not try to twist scripture i think this is
very clear.Does God bless his people yes, but not more
than they can handle and not just because they give
money..what about the Christians in other countries that
are poor and are killed for there faith??where is there
mercedes and jet??Are they less spiritual,??NO in fact
i think believers on other countries often times have more
genuine faith than many Americans because they are not
spoiled by todays feel good society.i did leave me church
because the pastor stopped walking in integrity and i refuse
to sit under the teaching of a man that preaches error
and then tries to twist scripture to justify it..Simply put, Christians arent always and arent ussually a good example of
Christ, however that is what Jesus died for our imperfections,
so ill take my chances believing in Christ instead of being so
arrogant as to try to play God and make my bed in hell.Yes
there are still good churches out there, but you have to be selective if i can qualify some of my statements.

I studied the Bible and many American religions. I began my religious journey in 1958 and walked away from organized religion in 2000. I've been a Baptist, Nazarene,Methodist, Catholic and Lutheran. I've visited a plethora of churches and attended many Bible studies.
Each time, I walked away with more of a conviction that the word of the Lord was being manipulated by the American churches.
Untill, I can take my family out of here, we'll be gettin' our religion directly from the source and eliminating the middle man.

I'm educating my family to take responsibility for their own actions and not blame some fictional "devil". They're learning to get off their fannies and do for themselves and not sit around and pray for results.

This is our world, we can make it anything we want.

Taking science classes in high school. Finding books on biology, natural history, chemistry, astrophysics, etc. in the school library. Later going to the university.

It became apparent that the Bible stories don't add up.

The best tool for atheism is the Bible itself, though I do not claim to actually know there is no god. I just know the Bible god is a hoax.

I'd like to know why that question gets asked all the time on here, but at least it isn't Pascals Wager.

I drifted away. There was no one incident. I just got an education and grew up.

1a) A lot of bad happening in life
2) Beginning to question everything
3) Reading the Bible and realizing how much was a lie/flawed

I'm agnostic.

I never had any to walk away from.

When I subsequently found out what faith was, the whole thing seemed deranged: suspend logic? If you do that you might swallow anything. I've since discovered that this is exactly what many people do.

Studying the bible and then going to study history and judaism.. finding that there was no historical evidence whatsoever for the existence of the biblical Jesus, among other things.

i walked away from god a few years back because i really thought i could "habdle it from here, God". but i must say thats when things got really messed up. i have since come back with lots of caution and time. probably a little testy of me, but God was gracious and knew i needed the time to really get to know who he really was and i think enjoyed the time to show me who he "really" was, not what i preceieved him to be, and man, now i love God more then anything you could imagine!
