My personal favorite is "God helps those who help themselves," which appears nowhere in the Bible, and in fact is directly opposed to everything Jesus had to say about the poor and helpless.
Some people like to sound as if they have scriptural backup for their opinions, and some people just think it makes them sound smarter to be able to 'quote' things. It doesn't work, but they think so anyway.

Most bible believers have never even read the thing. They have no clue at all what is or is not in the book and they think everybody else is as ignorant about it as they are.
Please note that over 50% of the American population is so illiterate that they can not read the instructions on a pill bottle.

People put their own interpretation on scriptures to suit themselves. Or they just open their mouth with out thinking.
You get a lot of that kind of thing in this section! So many 'Christians" (no offence to the nice ones) think they can just twist the scriptures and interpret them in anyway they see fit.
If a Bible verse said red is red, I am sure someone around here would try to say the verse meant red is blue...
Not a lot you can do except shake your head and move on.

Well, many believers don't read the Bible. For some reason, these believers think no one else has - therefore they can invent stuff, hoping no one will be the wiser.
And yet, many people turn Atheist/agnostic/etc after reading the Bible, so really, the believers need to replan their strategy...

If I follow your question correctly, Jesus did indeed several times, quote the old testament.
So did the apostles, especially Paul.

Perhaps he wasn't really a believer?
Here are two things which are NOT in the Bible:
"God helps those who help themselves"
"Cleanliness is next to Godliness"

Try to keep in mind that when you engage Christians in debate, you aren't always dealing with the sharpest tools in the shed.

Because some of them don't know the bible as well as they should.
While we're on the subject: why do so many atheists confuse "plunder" and "rape"? Is all rape "plunder"? Is all plunder "rape"?
