My dog will get loose and I think he may have killed 2 possibly 3 cats from the nieghborhood, one was found in my yard. I haven't seen him actually do the horrific act but he comes home with scratches and next thing I know, a neighbors cat is dead. Does anyone know how to correct this horrid behavior? He is really great around the kids and family.

I do have a fenced yard and the cats have gotten into my yard. My children also are small and don't shut the doors to the house properly and the dog gets out, unfortunatly. He is very loving to them but y'all have clearly stated how bad this may be. I am responsible and sadly have come to the decision the dog will have to be drop him off at the pound to be put to sleep. Thanks for all the imput in making this hard choice.

Well he needs some serious training, but first of all, STOP him from getting out! Apart from the obvious horror issues, you're risking getting yourself into serious trouble if anyone figures out whose dog is doing this.
Make your yard and house ESCAPE PROOF. It isn't that hard, just get a high, secure fence all round your yard. Your dog slipping past you through should not be an option - if you're opening the yard gate, make sure the dog is shut in the house. If you're opening the front door, make sure the dog is shut in a room. Be vigilant, you CAN stop this happening again. Hope you can find some way to train this behaviour out of your dog (sounds like a job for a behaviourist, although cat-killing is fairly natural for a dog) but the most important thing is to stop him escaping!!

Put up a dogproof fence or else tether the dog in the yard - stopping the dog from getting out is the only way to prevent this from happening.
What would happen if a small child was holding the cat ?

I've been on the other side of this having had a cat killed by a dog that just kept getting loose in the neighborhood. It's brutal. Imagine finding your dog torn up and killed like that. Please build a good fence that will keep your dog from running loose. Also if he hasn't been neutered, have him neutered. That may cut down on some of his desire to roam.

He's obviously got a high prey instinct. Keep him confined to your yard! If he can jump the fence, get a higher fence and in the meantime put him in a covered dog run.

I would keep him leashed when out side , and not let him run loose. I have a miniature dachsund that kills cats. He's fine with kids and stuff, but not cats. Good luck to you, but I really don't think you could break him of this. I think it's instinct.

You need to make sure he NEVER gets loose again - whether he killed the cats or not! Be a responsible owner!

This is very simple. If he is doing something you don't like then stop him. If you can't stop him then get rid of him (problem Solved). People shouldn't get pets unless they think about the long term effects and how much responsiblity it is going to take.
