Is it possible for a dog to be so fat that they cant bark? We just got a french bulldog that is waaay overweight and doesnt bark, while i know some dogs are just quiet, i was wondering if it would be hard for her to bark because of how fat she is (by the way while she is cute fat we are still trying to get it under control.) If you know, plese tell. thanks!

I would say yes, for the following reasons: 1) French Bulldogs have a number of respiratory problems as it is, which can make it difficult for them to get adequate breath when they run or get hot; 2) fat in people causes them to be short of breath; 3) your vocalizing ability depends on your breath, so combine all those factors & I would say yes, her fat is inhibiting her ability to bark. Animals are cute when they're fat, but you're right, it's not healthy, so good for you for getting her to a healthy weight.

I'm glad you're trying to get it under control, I don't think fat is cute at all, because it's so unhealthy.

I don't know about being literally unable to bark through being too overweight, but fat animals do generally feel extreme lacks of energy even to the point where they can't face walking, so it's entirely possible he just can't be arsed to bark. Or it could be that he's just not a dog that barks.

If you need any advice or help with her weight loss, if you're not already seeing a vet about it, feel free to email because I'm a vet nurse and I run weight clinics for overweight animals, it's my main area of interest.

I've heard of dogs that can't walk or sleep because they were so fat, but barking no. Look at overweight humans, they can all speak. So, I don't see why an overweight dog wouldn't be able to.
It's so terrible how people kill their dogs by overfeeding them. It's one thing to kill yourself by shoving tons of food down your throat, but not a poor animal.
Kudos for taking her on and good luck getting that unhealthy weight off. Bulldogs are not a good breed to be overweight, they have enough difficultly breathing simply due to the structure of their face.

Poor fat girl. How old is she? If she's an older dog your vet should check her out anyway. If she's a pup maybe she hasn't had a need to bark yet. How long have you had her?
Let your vet help you with this one. A hugely overweight dog can have some pretty serious complications associated with the weight.

I had an English Bulldog years ago, I not remember her barking much. So, maybe your dog is similar. They fairly intelligent dogs and if there no reason to bark they won't.
Maybe this help, more to learn at the link;
Not more or less barkers compared to other breeds. Frenchies are not typically excessive barkers.

maybe she was de-barked? (which is not cool...) well, even if she were, she'd still be able to make some muffled squeeky sounds.

i'm thinking that it shouldn't affect barking...just because when we're [people] are fat, it doesn't affect our speech(?). but it would affect breathing becaue of all the fat w/in and surrounding the chest.

but good for you that you're taking your doggies weight seriously, good luck!
