It seems to me family doctors are supposed to test for functionality of the different vital organs periodically for detection of abnormalities. Tests were not done every once in awhile and she now has kidney disease.

I don't know what country you reside in but in the U.S. tests for kidney function are not routine....they are performed only when symptoms exist that indicate a problem.

Most routine blood testing covers only a complete blood count and, if older than 35 or 40, thyroid testing. Liver function testing can be routine depending on the medication a patient is taking.

Other routine testing is not done as insurance companies would not pay for it and the patient would be left with huge medical bills. Medical insurance in this country is a profit making business so the cost of certain tests would not be covered if ordered without a specific reason or symptomology to back up the order.

Your family doctor didn't do anything wrong. Functionality of organs is not a covered insurance expense when there is no basis for ordering the test.
