I want plain-carbon (medium carbon is best) steel, not stainless, not galvanized. I just want flat pieces for a project I'm doing. Will Home Depot or OSH have that or do I need to go to a more specialized place (such as...)?
Thanks.

Check with a local industrial metals supply house.
These are usually listed in the Yellow Pages (in the U.S.) for your local area.
It would also be best to check with the shop / tech ed teacher (if you are in middle or high school), or the mechanical engineering shop (if in college).

A good online catalog to get you started is McMaster Carr: mcmaster.com
This will give a good idea what options are available and what questions the metals supply house will ask.

Good luck!

It depends on how big and how thick you need. Most hardware stores carry sheet steel up to 1/4" in small sheets, maybe 2' square. Tractor and farming stores will sometimes have larger sizes.
If you want thicker or larger stock look in the yellow pages for steel suppliers, most will have a "cut off" rack or sometimes called a drop rack. This is where they sell the leftovers from larger cuts and mistakes, prices are usually less than for custom cuts.
I try to buy my larger sections from recyclers and salvage yards, but I usually have to buy alot bigger peice than I need and it might need some cleaning or rust removal. For example I needed a 3' square of 1/2" steel plate for a bench top, ended up with a 4'x6' section that weighed more than 500 lbs! The price was less than half for a new cut of the original 3' square size though.

Depends on how large a piece of steel you want....

For some 12x12 or 12x24 inch sizes check out McMasteer-Carr. They also have bar and flat stock as well

You can check with a sheet metal shop. You should be able to find one in the phone book., it would depend on how thick of a peice you wanted. Heating and AC shops have think sheet metal.
