if youre a reservist you chose that for a reason like, not being deployed , money for school, only training 1 weekend a month, and 14 days when its hot. the last thing you expected was to be deployed

i am a marine corps veteran and i think training 365 days a year qualifies me more than someone who trains 38 days a year. its unfair to the reservist.take a look at the recent casualties in iraq . its not fair.

while the active duty soldier is in his barracks waiting to be deployed, a poor reservists who was delivering packages for UPS 2 weeks ago is driving around in a hummve waiting to become an amputee.. they never imagined it would come to this. THIS WAS THE POINT I WAS TRYING TO MAKE. thanks for all feedback, and godbless all servicemen and woman. lets finish what we started...

"...to protect and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies, FOREIGN and domestic". they took an oath. The fact they didn't read the fine print is not our fault. I served 4 years active duty with the Marines and then one year active reserve. I'm now in the air Guard and know I can get deployed. Life sucks. they shoulda paid more attention in high school so they could get that scholarship.

Our National Guard troops are among the best trained, and best equipped military in the world. Typically, "the Guard" are people who were formerly trained as active duty military, and are kept in readiness until needed.
The purpose of the National Guard is to defend the Nation from attack within (which is why they are called up during natural disasters or riots) and without (which is why they are activated during a time of war.)
National Guard troops, however, are attached to the various States, not the Federal Government. But the President of the United States, as the Commander-in-Chief of the US Military has the right to call up these State militia.
He has excercised his right to do so in order to defend us against terrorist. Whether you agree with his actions or not, this is EXACTLY why the National Guard exists.
Their equipment is paid for by the US government. Their payroll (while on active duty) is paid for by the US government.
These are our "weekend warriors," the few people who have been highly trained by the government to defend us. Don't for one minute believe these are "inferior" troops of any sort. They are not! These are strong, courageous, valiant men and women who are among the best trained, best equipped, and have the highest integrity of any in the military. They are defending our nation. A typical National Guard soldier was trained alongside the regular military in boot camp (a six-week, aggressive training in using the equipment, understanding the chain-of-command, and learning survival skill sets.) Then they get active time one week-end a month, and two weeks per year.
And they are ALL there 100% voluntarily. No member of the National Guard has to go to Iraq. They have to specifically request the assignment. They ALL have.
(With the normal Army, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard, and Navy, they can be assigned there without volunteering for the post, even though they volunteered to be in the military.)
Some people are in favor of fighting the Jihadists on foreign soil (Iraq) rather than on our own soil. Let them go, if they choose. The President had decided that it would be better if only those who clearly volunteer to put their lives on the line are sent into harms way. That is why the National Guard is on the streets of Iraq.

Not sure about the Army Guard, but I am a vet of the Air National Guard and 15 years ago you would have been right. Now, however, at least in the Air Guard, Guard maintenance is nearly 60% better than regular Air Force because our technicians work on the same planes their entire career. I taught two regular Air Force people how to do their engine management duties, and I became an engine manager only in the Air Guard. The Army may be entirely different, though. In the Air Guard, we work and we are just as good as the regulars, thank you. As Air Guard, I served in Kuwait for Operation Southern Watch and again in Turkey for Operation Northern Watch. We did the job as well as the regulars. I guess it is possible that the Army Guard is just as imcompetent as it was 15 years ago, though.

LorenzoAE must not been in the Service at all. The Army National Guard Basic Training is 9 weeks of intense training. I was at Ft.Knox and trained by some of the meanest Drill Sgts. As for your question, we train on the same equipment every month as opposed to Active duty guys, but I'm not putting anyone down that is/or was in the Military. The enlistment contract says you will serve your country when called to, and the guardsmen/women are called to duty and they act upon that. We took that oath when we swore in. B Co 2/81

Hate to tell you this but a lot of national guard units have a lot better training than regular army units. My national guard unit was replaced by the 101st in Iraq, and they seemed to be a bunch of idiots on the way they handled weapons in country.

The military isn't per say stretched too thin, they just have way too many things going on and personnel in too many locations around the world to have a good force to do much of anything.

Myself the national guard is supposed to protect the nation so its kind of pointless sending the national guard out of the country. Who's going to protect the US if all of us national guard people are in Iraq?

well let me say this you are wrong sir. i was in recovery in iraq in 2005 and a convoy got hit on the msr took out 26 trucks killed about 35 tcn.s and the ky national guard took 3 gun trucks and killed 28 bad guys and took 13 to jail some worked for us in biap and there was a lot of other things they did one hell of a job at so i say they do as good as any reg army and they run a lot of convoy escourt services that is a bad job in iraq because they are always geting hit if you got 30 trucks and 3 gun trucks 30 trucks no guns it is up to the 3 gun trucks to get them through so they do have business there in the streets and on the road and buy the way the army is # 1 there not a jar head the gunslinger said that

Our worst trained soldier is better than the average military's best trained soldier.

The National Guard is part of the "Total Army." They are there because they signed up for military service and part of that was going to a combat zone if called upon.

Do not besmirch our National Guard. They are good at their job as well.

Lava, don't know your experience with the Guard but Desert Storm did spotlight some weaknesses and those have since been remedied. The Guard brings a LOT to the table and many are active army vets that don't want to completely hang up their hat, but do still wish to be available when needed.

hi. particular, be afraid, yet be supportive. Our community national shield troop is on their first excursion in Iraq ultimate now. i think of each national shield troop has (or would be) deployed. some have long gone for 2 excursions already. it extremely is a tragic actuality of conflict. regrettably, as a results of our government, our national shield troops are being sent distant places to combat a conflict that they are actually not geared up to combat and interior the advise time, we are actually not arranged here regionally for an emergency. (This ultimate assertion comes from a properly score retired customary.)

Over a third of the Guard is involved in Law Enforcement, and half of all guardsman have at least an associates degree of some kind, that makes them better, not worse at the mission we are conducting in Iraq at this time. It is you that have made a mistake about the nature of the mission.

The national guard is a vital part of our military structure. Our nation does not have enough active duty troops to carry on our current active missions.
