Atheists never say 'because so-and-so says so' when they rationalize things. I find that refreshing and yes, I respect it more.
My parents are two of the smartest people I know - but they're both hopelessly Christian. Go figure (and no, they have blind spots about anything Christian).

'Do you think Athests are smarter, or christians? why?'
Usually, it doesn't come down to belief system. Atheists have the power of mind to reject conventional belief and substitute their own ideas and ideals in place of that. Not so difficult in a place where religion isn't wide-spread, but can take a very powerful mind if practically everyone around does.
Whilst the religious (there are more than Christians; I don't really think they're that different in mind-sets) have the sense to weigh up the outcomes from actions and decide on what they believe to be the better one to do, based upon the consequence.
The religious believe its better to live sinlessly here and go to a better place afterwards; I believe this is it and aim to make the most of it. Can you tell which one is smarter?

Thy head stands so tickle on thy shoulders, that a milkmaid, if she be in love, may sigh it off.
I've met some pretty dumb Christians but I've also met some pretty smart Christians
I've never met a real atheist before.
Therefore I would have to say Christians. Maybe someday I'll actually meet an atheist and you can ask this same stupid question again.
Seriously does it matter? Since when has intelligence made anyone a better or lesser human being?

i don't think it's an issue of intelligence at all. i think it's simply a case that aetheists desire evidence to base their beliefs on or at the very least have difficulty accepting something that is beyond proof.
on the other hand, religious folks (there are others besides Christians who believe in a god) have the ability to accept things on blind faith without requiring empirical evidence.
I've never understood why folks take issue with the other side. If a religious person's faith is so strong then what reason is there to get aggrivated by a non-believer and his/her comments? If one post is sufficient enough to upset and make one feel the need to defend his/her faith and lash out at others, then likely that faith wasn't all that strong to begin with.
On the other hand, aethiests (let's say non-religous in general as many agnostics fit here too) get all bent out of shape at the mere mention of the Bible or the mere glimpse of a religious icon (e.g., a nativity set at Christmas time).
Personally I don't believe in the Easter bunny or in vampires. However if I see an Easter bunny in someone's yard in the spring or a young child dressed as a vampire in late october, I hardly get offended by it. It's the same as above. If one is truly convinced their is no god then the mention of one would hardly be offensive. If however there is doubt then I can understand why mentioning a god can be offensive and cause one to lash out.
It's always easier to lash out when one is unsure of his/her own beliefs than to actually do some "soul-searching" and decide for oneself and hold onto those convictions. No matter which side of the aisle they fall on.

Religion and intelligence have nothing to do with one another. I have known both intelligent and unintelligent people of many religions (and no religion). If you're trying to imply that Christians (or atheists) are smarter than another group of people based on religion, then YOU are the one who needs to get a clue.

I would have to say that Atheists do more research to come to a conclusion about things. I know smart Christians too.
You are obviously not one of the smart Christians because you spelled atheist wrong.

I don't think that spiritual beliefs are indicative of intelligence per se.
There are many intelligent Christians and I'll bet NONE of them are fundies.
As a group, and making a wide generalization here, I'll make the statement that I think atheists are more intelligent than some religious people.

If you define "smarter" as having a higher IQ, then atheists are. Any member of MENSA can ask for the data themselves. For those of you who are unaware of what MENSA is, it is a society for people who possess near-, at-, or above-genius level IQ's. According to their statistics, almost 65% of MENSA's members are atheists. Another 25 to 28% are agnostics.

There is evidence of intelligence in both camps. Intellect can only be determined on an individual basis not understood as representative of a entire group
The reason that I know this,is because....I am really smart. LOL

IQ doesn't relate to the question. One could say a Christian is smart for keeping the path to Heaven but the atheist could be smart too but misled. You could say the atheist is smart for basing his choice on scientific research and the intellectuals of the past but the Christian could be finding evidence which isn't quantifiable by others.

Every human group has some smarties and some dummies. A lot of people just believe whatever they are taught, whereas others think it out for themselves. Labels are not important.
