I wouldn't say dorky, because some people want to make sure that they are takin every precaution against injury. cracked ribs don't feel too good at all. i personally don't use a chest protector or head gear. like i said, i understand why peope use it. to me and in my class we us foot and hand pads alodn with mouth pieces for protection and anything else is optional. we feel that if by any chance you get into a confrontation in the street, we're not going to be able to tell our attacker, "hold on one moment while i get my protective head gear and chest protector on." we kinda do it that way to get used to taking a hit, but we also watch our contact and not try to knock each other out in class.
so, is a chest protector dorky....no. it may just look that way. however, if you feel like you want to use it, go right ahead. because getting kicked or hit in the ribs or chest can knock the wind out of you. you're no less of a martial artist if you practice with one. just know you wouldn't be able to use it in the street if you have to defend yourself.

Like a lot of others have said, its a chest protector, its purpose it to protect you from broken ribs, bad bruises and such so dorky shouldnt really matter because dorky would be to not use one during a high profile tournament and get the crap beat out of you. Thats not what you care about right now though so for your question i would say to pick a different color. Its my personal choice. The design of the protector itself is real nice compared to the many other designs. Its big but sleek which is nice. There are lots of big bulky designs. Its also not too small and looks to be shaped pretty well.Depending on your uniform color and personal preference depends on what color you would like, and also double check on what your dojo and tournament regulations say as well. Some can be pretty picky but usually only with the brighter colors, yellow, pink, orange...black, white, red or blue are probably safe. I personally liked the blue. Like some have said, they dont use them for the purpose that you couldnt use one out on the street. This is true and at many times in class I dont use one. At many tournaments nowadays though it is required for your protection and the tournament providers in case of any insurance issues or lawsuits. Go ahead and practice without it or do 50/50, but have one just in case.

It isn't dorky. That model is actually one of sleekest I have seen. Most models are much dorkier.
In Thailand female competitors are required to wear a much bulkier chest protector. I don't think anyone would call one of them dorky. Especially since now the formal male national champion Thai Boxer has had a gender change operation and she/he is now competing in the women's class.
It might not look cool, but neither does a motorcycle helmet or a seat belt.

Check out some of the others that both Asian World and Century have in their catalogs or on-line. Besides various types of chest protectors they also have under uniform type chest protectors for women and bra cup inserts that are less obtrusive. Many women prefer to wear those on the NASKA national tournament circuit. I believe that in either ATF or WTF Tae-Kwon-Do tournaments an outside one is required for fighting.

Hey, if you feel you need to wear a chest protector, wear one. It's better to be safe than sorry. Of course, those who put on chest protectors in my dojo find themselves UKE during the entire class.

If it's for protection I wouldn't care if people think it's dorky, some guys in my class don't like to use head protection, but I wear it because I want to protect myself.
What people think is irrelevant, if it comes to your protection.

you r going to wear it under a layer of clothing so people arent going to know so it doesnt matter if its 'dorky' which its not but remember that you probably wont be wearing 1 in the street if you get attacked
