For example, having an Insignia receiver with Sony speakers and an RCA DVD player?

Absolutely. It is best to have the speakers match all around but most people mix component brands since different brands excel in different items (Sony DVD players are great, for example, but not their receivers). One also finds different components of different brands on sale. Mixed component brands is usually a sign of smart shopping.

No problem as long as you stay within the operating limits of your gear such as the power handling of your Sony speakers connected to your Insignia receiver.
Enjoy!
