Have they fallen from the nest, or have they fledged?

Baby birds fledge (leave the nest) several days before they can fly. They hop around on the ground and climb low branches until their wings are strong enough for flight. The parents still feed the babies during this fledgling period. If the birds are mostly feathered, leave them be - they are fledglings and the parents are "going ape" because they want to feed and care for the fledglings, but your presence is scaring them off.

If the babies are not mostly feathered, if they are still mostly fuzz, they are nestlings, and should be returned to the nest, if possible, or placed in some low bushes near the nest, and the parents will continue feeding them.

It is absolutely false that the parents will reject the babies if you touch them. That is a myth. A bird's sense of smell is not that acute. Wildlife biologists remove baby peregrine falcons from their nests to band them, weigh them, and take blood samples for study. They handle the babies with their bare hands. When they return the babies to the nests, the mother peregrine never rejects them. You can see photos here: http://www.wbu.com/chipperwoods/photos/perefalcon.htm

It is not true that a mother or father will abandon a baby if it is touched. That is an old wives tale. It could be that the parents are tossing the babies out of the nest. IF there is something wrong with the birds then parents will throw them out. Also if the parents are new to being parents sometimes they are not good parents and this happens. Some birds, just like people, do not need to be parents.
I have had to foster some of my birds into other nest before because the parents did this.
you have a choice you can either read up on how to raise them , put them back in the nest, put something around the nest to widen it, or leave them alone and let nature take care of them.
Unless you have an unlimited amount of time and money to buy the equiptment to take care of them, I would suggest just putting them in the nest and walk away.

Sounds like these birds are fledglings and are jumping out of the nest on their own. This is a normal process..birds leave the nest before they can fly. Let them be...the parents will continue to care for them until they can fly. Birds have a poorly developed sense of smell and WILL NOT abandon their babies due to human scent...they simply cannot smell it. People telling you this are misinformed.

One thing everybody has to learn here, just because you touch the babybird doesn't mean that the mom won't come back.
Birds have a very bad smell sense, so if you can put the bird back. The mom always comes back for her baby

My understanding is that if a baby bird falls out of the nest and you pick it up and put it back in, your scent will be smelled by the mama bird on her young and she will not care for them. She will then push it out of her nest.

If they fall out again, don't put them back because the parent normally deals with it and will throw them out of the nest if they smell of human. The reason you keep finding them out of the nest is the parents maybe throwing them out because they smell different.
