for a male you could drop to 1500 calories a day and do 30-40 mins power walking and lose three pounds a week
then you could maintain that with the diet you suggest.

Think about it- you starve yourself for 3 weeks just drinking water and eating carrot sticks and lose weight like billio!- then suddenly you start eating and despite how healthy it is your still taking on a lot more extra cals than you have been the past few weeks and surprisingly your body will store them- AS FAT!!
Self starvation is never a good way to lose weight. You will feel completely miserable and obsess about eating things you think you can't. Start and finish with a proper healthy diet. I.e 3 meals a day with plenty of fruit and water. Exercise will also really help you lose unwanted weight as well. 30-40mins of cardio and 20 - 30 mins resistance 3-4 times a week will shape your body the way you want it.
Trust me- I run a gym.
Good luck x

Oh it's absolutely perfect...if you want to gain it all back, and more!
Seriously, you're admitting that you eat poorly, and you want to change that drastically, well it won't stick, it never does, if it did we'd all do it to lose weight, but there's a reason that diet gurus never tell you to starve yourself, they know it doesn't work.
Switch to a healthy diet, if your diet is unhealthy right now, switching to a healthy one will make you drop weight fast, and I mean fast. You really don't need to starve, you'll see that drastic weight loss right away.
Think about it like this, you eat poorly, lots of grease, maybe lots of pop, well that's a lot of calories. A healthy diet is naturally low cal, but with all the fulfillment and taste.
So my advice is very simple, if you're gonna eat it, make it yourself. Make your meals from scratch and make sure they're healthy, with 1/2 of your plate full of veggies, 1/4 with protein and 1/4 with carbs, make sure to add a salad or cottage cheese and fruit into your day. This all just means less unnecessary calories.
I don't see why you'd starve yourself if you have a good option for great foods, I really don't see the logic in that, you'll just be hungry, and gain it all back. The reason is because your body also metabolizes muscle as well as fat if you starve yourself, and you need muscle for your metabolism, the more muscle you have the more energy you burn all the time, the more you lose, the less energy you burn, and the fatter you get.
Eat healthy, be healthy.

Yep, starvation will lose everything, but it will be back in spades when you start eating again. That's why starvation diets only "work" temporarily.
If you're interested in long-term results, you have to exercise hard to build some muscles and elevate your metabolism. Then, you do the long walks or jogs to keep the fire burning.
Do not cut calories or you will not have the energy for your workouts. Eat a balanced diet and become more active. Avoid stress and starvation or you will gain fat, not lose it. A moderate amount of "sweets" are OK immediately after a workout, as a reward to feed your new muscles and cut cravings later.
The combination of muscle + (exercise/intensity) x (time) is your best way to lose fat and improve your physique. Just remember that muscle weighs more than fat, so you will check your results with the tape and the mirror, not the scale.

No it doesn't work! You need a well balanced diet with a reasonable caloric intake to lose weight. It takes a certain amount of calories to stimulate your metabolism and if you aren't eating enough then you won't lose anything at all. If you need to lose a lot then you must see your GP and get them to refer you to a dietician as they will calculate how many calories you need before you can expect to lose anything. I've now lost 98 pounds over the past 3 years so I do know how hard it is! Good luck pet.

i sort of self starved last year, i had a bit of a stressful time so i just didn't eat, without thinking. i didn't monitor my weight but within 9 or so weeks i dropped from a size 12 to an 8. its not healthy and i wouldn't recommend doing it. the weight didn't stay off, i put it all back on really quickly. if you eat sensibly with a balanced diet and exercise regular then you will lose the weight and it will stay off. start with the sensible diet, never self-starve.

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
temporary changes (starving/depriving your body) will give you temporary results - you will slow down your metabolism and only lose water weight and muscle NOT fat.

It does work for a bit, usually when it gets to summer i want to quickly lose a stone and only eat cereal for brekkie then maybe nothing for lunch or an apple. Then maybe cereal for tea like crunchy nut cornflakes, i do it for 2/3 wks and usually lose up to a stone. But i exercise a bit too, i do 10 mins fast walking on running machine then 100 sit ups. That usually does it. I only do this for a few wks, i wouldn't recommend doing it all the time.

Definitely not.
People often confuse fat loss with weight loss. Losing fat is one thing, but losing weight can mean you are losing water weight, muscle mass or fat. When people rush weight loss with crash diets and by starving themselves, then tend to lose muscle mass instead of fat. The less muscle you have in relation to your fat mass, the higher your body fat ratio becomes.
It's very unhealthy to do this and you will just end up getting fatter, which is the exact opposite of what you are trying to achieve!

It certainly looses the weight, but you'd get the headaches, moodswings, straw-like hair, brittle nails, greasy skin. Don't know if it's worth it really.
I would say to take the longer route but healthier route of eating veggies and that.
