I think its quite the other way around and atheists have a complex about christians ...

I don't look down on atheists. In fact if you look at my profile most of the contacts I have there are atheists. I am not threatend by them. Sometimes they let me see behind the front to their hurting hearts... and I pray for them regularly.
If many of the so-called Christians on this site would really have the love of Jesus in their lives, they wouldn't be threatened by what atheists say either. Unfortunately, too many just have the label-- and not the relationship with God that marks a true Christian.

Atheism is a huge threat to organized religion. If a pastor/preacher/minister/pope/ spiritual leader tells their congregation that atheists are legitimate, sane people, the followers just might see if these atheists are onto something. This behavior is a power-play coming from corrupt 'leaders'. Over the centuries, religion has had to slowly bow to logic/science, to survive. If people do not follow the scum that 'lead' them, the scum lose power, and have to get humble. Power-hungry dirt-bags do not want to relinquish their 'respectable' positions. It is very basic, very sound, psychology.
We are an enormous threat to the people in control.
This, ironically, is equal to the threat that Jesus posed to the government of the time.

Well, atheists/agnostics aren't the only ones who "suffer" for their beliefs.
But as to why many Christians look down upon us, it's probably because they've been taught to think that only they are right and that we are all heathen sinners out to get them. A lot of people like to think they're at odds with the rest of the world, and thus the enemy is anyone who does not agree. They do not realize just how numerous their people are.

Most atheists, pardon my presumptuousness, believe in logic and plausibility above all else, sloughing of the comfort provided by thousands of years of tradition. It is this deliberate and blatant denial and refute of someone else's religion, based on logic rather than feeling, that makes religious people feel attacked and perhaps makes them very likely to dislike an atheist.

That info is from a poll they took that said atheists were looked down upon. But I don't believe the poll. I think in cities and places where people aren't dumb hicks its totally normal to be an atheist. I think for that poll they asked a bunch of leave-it-to-beaver bible thumping retards and that's why they got that response.

Because all Christianity sects preach that you HAVE to be some kind of Christian or you are not from the right side of the tracks...so to speak. Christians look down on anyone that don't share their beliefs. And what is really funny is that they look down on each other for not living up to those beliefs, too.

I found that a lot of people have never even heard of an atheist and certainly not believing that anyone doesn't believe in god. so when they discover what an atheist is, they get scared and freaked out instead of doing some research for themselves. usually they get opinions from people who are shut ins just like themselves.

because pastors get up on their soap boxes every week and preach to his congregation that if you are not saved then you are damned to hell and are an evil person.All this is done as an offering basket is passed around and the preacher tells you to have faith in god and be generous to the church and he will get you your lifes needs.People with these attitudes are the very reason why laid back christians like myself don't waste our times in church.These very people who think they are the holiest thing walking will walk all over you monday thru saturday and have false hopes that their soul is redeemed on sunday.

Because the majority of the US have major misconceptions about Atheists, fed to them by their parents, the Bible, or their pastor. They seem to think that Atheists are these evil people who hate God and all that.

I'm over 6 feet tall. The guy two doors down from me is an atheist and is only 5'8'' tall. What can I say?
