I think that Mel used about ten barrels of Hollywood "blood" in some of his scenes. Then after all of this bleeding, another couple of quarts squirted all over Captain Longenus as he stuck the spear in. This doesn't happen even if no blood was lost before the spear went in.
Movies are great, but some effort should be put into making it believable.
