Its just a way of saying you were there
to visit the person that has died...and if you put your favorite stone there its even better.
Its an Irish thing...My Grandma told me about this...a very long time ago...

putting a stone on a grave stone shows that someone has visited that site and is keeping an eye on it and loves the person that is buried there. you will sometimes see grass on a grave stone too.

they are grave markers..they are mandatory in most respectable gravesites and they are beautiful and should say something profound about the life of the one who is resting there..
