The Church of England is threatening to sue Sony over the use of Manchester Cathedral as a backdrop in a war against aliens video game.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6738309.stm

Sony must be rubbing their hands in glee over the free publicity they are receiving whereas the Church of England must surely have more pressing causes to concentrate on like eradicating the contagion of paedophilia which is rampant in their church or trying to alleviate the suffering of the poor and destitute.

Has the Church of England finally lost the plot?

I am not religious and I do agree with you that there are indeed more pressing causes.
However, I do believe it is insensitive on the part of Sony to use a place of worship as the setting for a violent video game. I do not mean it is insensitive towards the Church as an institution, but I can imagine the actual people who worship, had the funeral of a loved one there, ... might feel hurt.

The Bishop Of Manchester has every right to sue Sony and get an injuction on the sale of this violent piece of crap. The Cathedral is a beautiful place and is the house of God and some who criticise it should be ashamed. Is nothing sacred anymore.

The only way you can prove its not just the C of E with a rod up their ar*e, Sony will have to set their next game in a mosque. If the muslims make a fuss about it, then, yes, it was a bad idea.

I think they are on a loser there, last time I checked, you couldn't copyright a building.

Besides, we have a long tradition of Alien invasions and Churches here in the UK. It's been in Quatermass, at least 3 episodes of Doctor Who and the awful Sci-Fi Film Lifeforce!

Perhaps the millions they'll get from Sony will help them police the paedophiles or alleviate the suffering of the poor and destitute.

I don't know about the Church of England specifically. But many churches have "lost the plot" as you put it. However, as to the matter of the 'rightness' of the Church of England's lawsuit in this matter, I guess that would depend on their motive.

If Sony have used the image they should pay the church just as you would expect payment if they used a picture of your house without your permission.

A simple case of using someone's "identity", "image" or "trademark" without their permission, my friend.

Perfectly acceptable to do so in law, rightly or wrongly. I guess it wouldn't have done Sony any harm to have asked now, would it?

Probably would have cost them a lot less in legal fees as well!
