I realize it's dumb not to follow a doctor's orders but she told me to aim for a pound a week. But I have read sites saying that you can lose up to 4 pounds a week safely, some which were written by doctors. 1 pound a week just seems like so little to me, and I have a lot to lose.

how do you know they are real doctors???
your doctor is wright - its healthy to lose 1-2lbs a week - if you are losing more its not fat you are losing, its muscle and water weight which means you are also slowing down your metabolism.
find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

It's feasible to lose any quantity of weight in any period of time, it simply is dependent upon the process. Healthy weight reduction for an grownup has a prohibit of round 3 kilos every week. If he obtained a surgical procedure for weight reduction, five pound for one week is particularly fair, but when he claims to have performed it via vitamin and undertaking, persuade him to sluggish down. He can have been mendacity, but when he has a metabolism that is quicker than the ordinary, he in general wasn't.

Here's the rule of thumb month one is 8-12lbs, its hard work but you can safely do 2lbs a week but youd have to eat about 1400 calories a day and exercise for 90minutes or more (constant cardio)

i think the doc just doesn't want you to get your hopes to high in case your 4 or 5 pounds a week doesn't work out. take it slow and work as hard as you can but don't over exert yourself. good luck.

Why don't you just get started, and later on you can worry about what's the correct speed to take with this.

If you don't follow your doctors advice, you can jeopardize your health. But they don't always know everything....
