External.... It also gives you a way of knowing if a round is in the chamber.. simply slide your finger forward and feel if the extractor is raised.

Most folks who are longtime shooters use the indoor ranges. I am a member of a range where we have hundreds of shooters. Many is the time you cannot get a lane because of the backlog of people waiting.

It's a huge controversy among 1911 fans.

On the one hand, even John Moses Browning, who designed the pistol, admitted that the internal extractor was its weakest feature. It needs to be retuned from time to time for optimal function.

On the other hand, many external extractor designs have had problems. For instance, Kimber started manufacturing their slides with external extractors, and then switched back to internal after numerous customer returns.

Me? I think an external extractor, when done properly, is a good thing. S&W and Sig both make external extractor 1911's, and I'm not aware of any problems with their current designs.

Oh, and as for why gun questions have to be asked here? It's because Yahoo doesn't have the cojones to give firearms discussions their own section--it's not politically correct.

The external Extractor/Ejector has been around a long time and as such has also stood the test of time. While internal extractors/ejectors are becoming more prevelant the external is easier to repair or un jam when something does go wrong.
I prefer the external for that reason..........simplicity.

As to........Why is handgun shooting refered to as an out door sport ....................
There are more people who use Handguns out of doors then there are indoor shooters.
Indoor target ranges are ok if you live in the city and can afford a membership .............But for the most part people prefer to shoot out side for the simple fact that it is a good excuse to get the heck out of the house for a couple of hours and have some fun with friends and family.
OH ! Doc............If you shoot without hearing protection inside or out you aren't going to have very good hearing for long , I've shot for over 40 yrs indoors and out and with the help of hearing protection have never had any ill Effects from either !

There is nothing like that good old Mauser style Claw extractor for yanking empties out of the chamber.

As for: "why does Yahoo consider handgun shooting to be an 'outdoor' sport?"

Most handgun shooting is done out of doors. Best way I know of to ruin your hearing is to fire a couple of shots indoors.

I like external extractors better because most often they are easier to replace if they break. Second if you ever have to headspace a rifle, external ones are usually easier to remove and reinstall. If you mean the peice that grasps the cartridge rim or case head.
The downside to external extractors is that if you ever have an out of battery firing the extractor usually goes into orbit or the person to your right, if shooting a semi auto.

If you mean the ejector (piece that throws the empty brass) I prefer internal. They are less likely to bend or break.

I think your extractor question depends on the gun you are shooting. I think the External are great on rifles, but Para Ordnance has their new extractor on their handguns that is supposed to be great.

As a IPSC/USPSA shooter, I has handguns with both, both styles have fired many thousands of rounds with out failure.

I don't hold a preference for either design.

As for your second question, with the exception of winter, most shooting sports and ranges are outdoors.

Either way that works, or comes with the firearm... I think they don't consider handgun shooting anything yet, it just so happens we're in the section of OUTDOOR RECREATION.
That's because they haven't got it on SPORTS yet.
