I'm planning on a short trip to Montreal this August with three other friends and want to make sure we're not going to have any problems with the border patrol with I.D.

Any valid goverment issued photo-id (driver's liscence, state-id, green card etc) is sufficient for crossing the border on land . Airtravel requires a passport, or until sept 30th proof of application for passport along with picture id and proof of citizenship (birth certificate, naturalization documents etc).

drivers license and birth certificate is what is used to be a couple years ago but now you need a passport. Customs guy I remember was crude. Asked me if I had a good time in Canada and I'd say "yes, I did " coming home from Montreal (which is beautiful) and he said, "yeah, I sure bet you did". Aren't they supposed to match the faces with the ID, I remember him looking everywhere but, never once looked me in the eye. Sure didn't made me feel very safe and secure coming back to the states. They really need to be more professional, less rude leaving Canada. The Brighter side was everyone very professional going into Canada. This was all at the airports. But the ID's required should be the same.

If you are traveling by LAND you need only a government issues I.D. like a military I.D. card, state I.D. card or drivers license...AND a certified copy of your birth certificate. After Jan. of 2008 you will also need a passport. If you are flying, you need the passport now.

You need to prove both your citizenship and identity. A passport will do that. Otherwise a combination of you drivers license to prove your identity, and a birth certificate to prove your citizenship is the minimum standard.
