You have 2 options. You can try to have it removed by laser (expensive, painful, not 100% effective), or you can get it covered up.
You will have to consult a tattoo artist to see if it can easily be covered. If not, some people do 1 or 2 laser removal sessions, just enough to lighten it up, and then tattoo over it.
DIY tattoos are bad news!

My fiance' had some really dark homemade tattoos that were done about 20 years ago. We used white tattoo ink and went over it about 3 different times and it has made it has lightened it enough that he will be able to get them covered up with something else..the new tattoo will have to be placed creatively over the old one, but I should be able to be done if you have a good enough tatto artist that has experience in that area..Good luck and PEACE!

It may be possible to cover it up with another tattoo depending on how big and dark your current tattoo is. So you should definitely go to talk a professional tattoo artist about it if you want another one in the same spot. Because some tattoos can be covered up and some can't.

I haven't gotten one removed, but I assume it is going to hurt. The ink is under your skin, there is going to be no easy way to get it out. I think I heard somewhere that getting one removed hurts eve more then getting the actual tattoo.

I can tell you how NOT to have it done. Some quack talked me into a procedure call "salubration" the basically scrape it off with a cheese grater and rock salt. Then it blisters and when the scab came off 75% of the tat was gone. Now it is uglier because I will not go through it again!!!!

yes you can cover up a tattoo. i have one on my hand that has been covered up 3 times already. otherwise if you get laser removal you can not get another tat in that same spot. been getting tatted up since i was 14 and am 33 now. you can also lighten it before getting it covered, you do it by taking lemon juice and tatting in your tat already there.

You should learn from the first experience, seems like a great idea at the time but most people regret doing it later.
Laser treatment very expensive, leaves scarring.
or try and incorporate the original with the new too camo it.
