I'm taking an objective poll:

Let's say you have dogs, and specific dog dishes from which you feed them.
Then you have specific dishes that people use.

Do you use the same dish sponge for both when washing these dishes, or do you use two different sponges, one for dogs, and one for people?

Point A) There is soap and hot water involved, so any germs are cleaned away by the soap and hot water.

Point B) Dogs eat poop and lick their own butts.

Your vote is appreciated.

Thank you,

We don't really use enough dishes to run the dishwasher everyday. IT would be wasteful. There's just 2 dog dishes, 1 cat dish, and maybe a plate and a cup or two.
But thanks! Save water when you can.

Since having taken Clinical Pathology and Sanitation in College (for vet tech) I am going to tell you to definately use two sponges, and rinse in really hot running water.

It's fine as long as you are generally clean. I've had dogs all my life and put the bowl in the dishwasher or wash at the end if I am doing other dishes. It is the over protective people that find their children get all the illnesses of the day. A dog's tongue cleans all it's wounds etc. so unless the animal has some dreadful disease there's no harm. Others will say different but through the ages animals have lived very closely with humans and this era is no different.

I have a few different sponges that I always soak in bleach and then wash. Sponges are soooo nasty! They just collect germs! The only time I use a sponge is to whipe stuff down before I put it in the dishwasher, we always have plenty of dishes to put in the dishwasher. I unload the dishwasher and fill it right back up. I normally whipe down all of our dishes and then whipe down our dog bowls (4 big bowls) then put them all in the dishwasher. After I do all of that I get out a new clean sponge so I can use it next time and I soak the other one in bleach and then wash it. Someone else said that they put their sponges in the microwave, that also works really well, I also do that sometime. So, yes I use the same sponge, but its not like I am washing the dishes with that sponge, I whipe them down and put them in the dishwasher and then soak the sponge in bleach and wash it. Again, I hate sponges because they are so nasty! I cant even stand to touch it unless it has been soaked in bleach! lol! Im really not a neat freak or a germaphobe, I just really hate sponges! lol! : )

Oh and I just wanted to add that yes my dogs lick their butts (and everything else), but they have never eaten poop. I am sure that Destiny (our 5 month old female) would if she was ever around it enough to eat it, but I know Brooklyn (1year 1 month old male) wouldnt! lol.. He is more picky than alot of people! lol!

I am also a dishes in the dish washer kind of person. But, I have let my dog lick my bowls after I have eaten something LOL. I know all you germaphobics out there are cringing like crazy right now:p Of course I clean it in the dishwasher before I eat off of it again. But come on now folks, if you have ever had a puppy, they lick. And I don't know anyone who has had a puppy that has not gotten a lil accidental french kiss from their pooch. So using the same sponge or washing their dishes in the same load as mine doesn't hardly compare to them having their tongue in your mouth. LOL

I wouldn't because, as you pointed out, dog's do very nasty things like eat poop and lick their behinds. I would not do this also because things from the human plate could get on the dog dish that would not be very good, like something you didn't want them eating. So i do not think you should wash your dog's dish with the same thing you wash your dishes with.

Ok well first off let me just say that there are some germs that water can not wash away.As an example(Say that your human friend is bleeding so she washes her hand and then the blood and water are in your sink...If she has certain illnesses like aids ect. then that a germ that requires more than water to kill it off.)Some diseases require alcohol and other germ killing agents to kill of the bad bacteria..There are some doggy bacteria that cant be killed by water and soap as well(just like with humans). So i do not recommend washing your human dishes with the pet dishes as you can make both yourself and your pet sick...Good luck with your journey to save water and keeping you and your babies safe.
Oh and by the way did you know that the sponges to clean dishes with hold more bacteria than most brushes and rags...Check it out here http://www.foodhaccp.com/internetjournal/ijfsv6-4.pdf

I don't use sponges, I think they carry too much bacteria themselves. However, if I did, I wouldn't mind sharing sponges between human and doggy dishes.

Interesting question...

Personally I do use the same scrubber on my dog's dishes, BUT, before using it again afterwards, I clean it out using soapy clorox water!
The germs are cleaned away by the Clorox even more so than by the soapy water.

I used one sponge but washed the dogs dish last. We're still living disease free.

I would use the same sponge but I always put bleach in my dish water... Just cause it kills all the germs and smells clean
