It is dangerous to thaw frozen food in hot or warm water as it provides a conducive atmosphere for germs to grow or flourish if they are around already. As you know already, the defrost setting on the microwave cooks it slightly at the wrong temperature so it is unsafe as well. The proper way is to get it out of the freezer several hours before you need to cook it.Depending on its size you might need up to 12 hours in which case you should place it in the fridge from the day before and letting it thaw at its own pace.

i don;t recommend you try and do it any quicker than naturally defrosting it in your fridge.
You run the risk of leaving tiny ice particles in the meat. this in turn will mean the meat wont cook properly ..then resulting to salmonella or even e-coli. You don;t want either of these. Just defrost the average sized chicken in the fridge for 24 hours.

To defrost chicken safely you need to let it thaw slowly in the fridge, it can take up to 48 hours, DO NOT as someone has suggested put it outside in the heat, that is just asking for trouble. And don't put it in water either.

You can't safely. Even if you put it in hot water there is a risk of some inner parts remaining frozen and not cooking properly and giving a risk of food poisoning. If the chicken was meant for today, have anther think about what to have for dinner today and have the chicken tomorrow.n

Well if you find that the microwave on defrost cooks it slightly you can always set it on a lower wattage/power.

Sorry, but the only safe way to do it is in the microwave. Keep stopping and starting it to avoid cooking. It takes a bit of time but at least the chicken will be safe to eat.
