I am repainting my bedroom to a creamy ivory color with chocolate accents and the closets are painted white inside (they are pretty dirty as the house is over 50 years old, so they need painting anyway). Should I repaint them white or should I repaint them with the wall color?

Secondly, I have 2 closets in my room, one large one that has hanging bars and one small one that I'm installing shelving in. Should I paint both the same color? Again, just a fresh coat of white or the ivory color?

Thanks for your advice!

First I would give the closet a good scrubbin' before proceeding to the paintin'. I would paint both closets the same color for consistency and use at least an eggshell or satin sheen, not flat (closet walls take alot of abuse and flat will mark up easier).

Since closets can be cumbersome to paint, sometimes I will leave them white if I'm not sure how often the room color will be changed. But on the other hand, white is Blah! Go with the ivory and chocolate accents for a custom, professional look that you will enjoy everytime the closets are opened!

I would use a white eggshell finish in both closets. Closets are small, dark, and a real pain to paint. I'd use a paint that is very durable and light reflective. The creamy ivory might end up looking dingy, especially as it gets marked up.

Closets are a pain in the butt to paint, they are small and there are lots of corners and angles that can't be seen or reached easily. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it, and also, fresh paint will make anything you put in those closets smell like paint for a very long time.

1] empty closets
2] scrub before painting
3] paint with a light, flat, neutral - white or ivory. Paint or finish shelves to match. Of course, outside of closet will match rest of room.

I have 2 closets with doors & one without doors--I painted the one without doors for obvious reasons--didn't have enough money to buy more paint to do the insides of the other 2..I keep the doors shut lol
